I have been watching a carpet anemone for about two weeks now. My best guess at this moment is a harddoni. My biggest reservation on buying this one is the fact it is at Petco. Now when I seen this one there were two. One I instantly new was dead or just about to be, this one on the other hand seems to be doing very well. Full open, settled in one spot, good coloring, closed mouth.

Would you buy it or not just basing Petco on Petco past? As for their other salt tanks they look decent, though algae is prevelant. There is one tank and that looks to have flukes or brook, but that tank isn't for sale and under observation.

Opinions?

I'd get it. My healthiest haddoni I've ever bought came from petco about a month ago.

I wouldn't be deterred if it was from petco. If it looks healthy and the tanks look decent (not a lot of dying fish/coral) then I'd go for it.

Petco keeps strong halide tanks? Guess I should pay more attention the next time I go.

Unfortunately no. They keep T8 lit tanks. This is why many of their anemones parish. The tank I bought my carpet out of actually had gravel.. Mum thankful for this though because the employee just ripped it out. Luckily it did not have a strong grip on the gravel.

So I thanks to your help, motivation, or enabling I went out and took another long hard look tonight. They moved water around to create flow, touched it, almost fed it for me. Then they actually let me put my hand in the tank to feel for stickiness and get a good look at the mouth. So I brought it home. There was gravel in the tank and he was attached firmly to the bottom glass. But she took her time and got it to release with no apparent tears. Acclimating now!

Well here is the carpet after one day and being under the lights for the first time.

Thanks! I am keeping a watchful eye on him right now. Decided last night to start moving. Only about two inches so far, but still watching.

Are you going to treat it? The mouth is a little open. I treated mine. The mouth after treatment was completely sealed.

It was gaping before treatment

It never gaped like I have seen before. In the second pic the mouth is open a bit, that is the most it has been so far, otherwise it is closed. No deflating or anything like that. Currently awaiting cipro, but am dosing vit C and keeping all parameters in line.

One note. It doesn't seem to like light very much. It can be full and all carpet looking. Lights come on, lowest possible setting to acclimate, and it almost goes flat. Then starts to regain shape. Lights go off and back to full looking.

Petco uses terrible lighting so even a single T5 bulb would be a upgrade for the anemone. I'd recommend using egg crate and taking off a sheet every couple of days. It's good to hear you're going to treat. You'll be happy you did. Make sure to keep is updated!

First two pics were today after I got home from work. Second two are about three minutes after the blues turned on. I checked and it is sticky. Thoughts or opinions on how it looks.

Looks good. Mouth is gaping a little but it's not a huge concern considering it's new to the tank. Sticky is good. One of my carpets got stuck to the glass 3x when I introduced it.

Well it has been a couple weeks now, so a update is due.

Carpet is alive still and doing well. Mouth is shut tight and the tentacles I thought were disappearing or melting are growing back. Only bad thing to report is the resting spot it chose, dead center facing the rear of the tank. Also the spot it chose has way more flow then I thought they liked, but it seems to like it.

Excuse the Noobish question, but I have been concidering a carpet. When you talk about "treating" him, what are you refering to? And what are you using? Are you just refering to dosing?

My carpets have all been from LFS or Mike, but all acclimated well. I have clarkiis in each tank and those make the nems feel at home. Thankfully, they only bounce on them at night, so feeding and seeing them stretch out during the day is never an issue.

You quarantine them and use ciprofloxacin to help kill any infection...

Have you kept anemones before? If not probably start off with a BTA first...
