Questions on the Maxspect Gyre

Just keep a close eye on the cable outer core near the Power-head. It is prone to going very hard and cracking exposing the electrical wires. I would not take a Gyre for free after two have failed on me.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on it. How long until they failed? When did you buy? Maybe they fixed the problem....being optimistic.

Mine was bought in January. Apparently the newer units have upgraded wiring but not sure on the cut off date.

I just compared the wire from my March purchase to the wire from my June purchase (both from Bulk Reef Supply), and the brand and serial numbers matched. Hopefully they are both the upgraded wire. Time will tell!

More than enough. I have twin MP40s and the Gyre in the center and have the gyre turned all the way down in my 240 gal due to turbulence. It is strong and EXTREMELY quiet.

We use the 130 in our 40b and love it. The wire issues were only on the 150 before they upgraded the wiring but the 130 has the upgraded wiring on them.

That is only powerhead and the return from sump gives us excellent flow.

mjs020294 makes a good point. I got the 150 shortly after it came out. One day I was doing maintenance with my hands in the water and got a nice jolt. Checked out my equipment to find the insulation cracked exposing the wires inside. Coralvue made good on it and sent a new motor which I haven't had issues with so far. They changed the insulation to a more resistant rubber to cracking.
Anyway all that being said I have a 65g and the 150 is nearly overkill. I absolutely love it though and my coral does too (I have a mix SPS/LPS tank more dominate in SPS)! I alternated the paddle wheels and they send a softer more turbulent flow from two different directions per wheel as opposed to one strong stream with the regular configuration. Works much better with my 65g. I have zero dead spots and it's a heavily stocked tank with rock and coral. Your 130 will be more than enough in a 40 breeder. Remember what I said about the reverse paddle wheel configuration if the normal way is too much force.
Far as snails go, I have not had an issue but do be careful with the fins because they are fragile and can break fairly easy if handled too rough.

I have a 130 in a 40b and run it at about 70%. I use the "surge mode", or whatever it is. I love it, been running it for about 3 months now and no problems with snails. Controller is definitely a plus.

I just took my gyre out to clean it last night and noticed the cracked wire casing. The yellow and green wires inside are exposed and I'm afraid to put it back in my tank. Is my gyre junk? Is there anything I can do about it? It's probably about a year old or maybe a little more.

Contact Maspect. They had this issue in the past and I believe were assisting customers with replacement housing
