Sorry if this is a stupid question but i just mixed my last 5 gal of rodi to do a weekly water change on my 29gal mixed reef tank and i added too much salt
Is 1.029 too high to add to my tank? Have it mixing right now as i type. Should i wait for my friend to give me more rodi water or should i just add the 5 gal now?

Don't add it. missing a wc is nothing compared to shocking your tank with a change like that

I think it will be fine. The other water will dilute it. As long as you do not have really sensitive corals your good to go.

It looks like there could be bubbles on the swing arm, which would make it read high (could be the picture though).

if it is correct, I would probably wait to do the water change.

Is it really as critical as i think it could be? I do have 9 frags in there and a beautiful anemone and three fish. I dont know what to do! One yays no. One says yes! Aaaahh

No i measured it like 10 times. Making sure there was no bubble. I just started mixing it 5min ago. Will it disdolve and drop or will it rise with time as it dissolves?
Thanks

Well if I have learned anything it's that you always should be safe. While I think it could be fine you will not want to risk it. I'd say wait now

Nope no bubble. And my 29 is a little low. Reading 1.022 right niw. Will it balance out?

I would wait. 1.022 to 1.029 is a huge difference, no harm in putting off a day or two til you can get more ro. Also it will not drop while mixing, in fact if any evaporation occurs it would raise the salinity. :)

Swing arm hydrometers should be banned. They are poor tools to measure salt. Get a refractometer or take your water to the store to test it. It may be your saltwater is actually 1.026 not 29.

Assuming your 29 gallon reef contains exactly 29 US gallons (although unlikely once you factor in water displacement from rocks, sand, pumps and livestock, but let's just roll with it for now) and is currently at 1.022sg then adding your newly mixed 5 US gallons at 1.029sg will raise your tank up to approximately 1.0232sg. This 0.0012sg increase is tolerable for most fish and invertebrates.

If your tank actually contains say 25 US gallons adding the newly mixed 1.029sg water will put you at 1.0234sg. Which is still acceptable in my opinion.

With that said I think 1.022sg is on the low side for a reef tank and think the increase in salinity may do you some good long term. Just don't go crazy trying to increase it overnight.

You should get a refractometer much more accurate.
I would like to add to this that you should also get calibration fluid. Mine didn't come with any and the instructions said to use distilled water for calibration. Calibrating at zero is not good. When I calibrated using distilled water and then tested it with the calibration fluid that uses 1.026 I was .003 off!

Tap water if youve tested it lol. Ive always used tapwater in my reef and it looks great. Just test it for phosphates and nitrates first. Maybe a little dechlorinator if needed
