I have a 55 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump and probably about 50 pounds of live rock and a 3" sand bed. When I'm dosing most things, there go by total gallons. How do I know how much to subtract for the rock and sand?

It's not only your rock and sand but equipment as well.
I always subtracted the volume from the sump off the total.
So you have 55 real gallons give and take.

Hey Diesel, completely unrelated question. I just did a treatment for Cyanobacteria this morning. How long should it take to see improvement? And how long should i wait to feed my tank?

With what you tested with?

I have no experience with RX redcyano RX can you post a pic of the package?

I tested it with hydrogen peroxide. That's what someone here told me to do.

That's good.
Let your skimmer running cause you need oxygen in your water.
Don't do another dose, it will take a few days that you see good results.

He Bro all I want is that you will be successful in this hobby as all the other 170.000 hobbyist that daily log in.
I'm trying, but i feel like I'm playing wack-a-mole sometimes. Everytime i get one thing under control, another pops up. But I'm learning a lot here, and having fun. Thanks again.

It takes time my friend.
Just don't jump around from one thing to another.
Stabilize your water parameters, do your regular water changes and use common sense in this hobby.

Ok, thanks. Now i have one more questions for you. I was taught that i should always siphon the water for my water changes from the bottom of my tank, and also push my siphin into my sand bed and clean the top layer of my sand(about an inch or so) but someone here was saying i dont need to do that and could just take the water from my sump. What's your thoughts on this?

I do water changes through the sump.
I have a method that I use for I don't know how many years.
Always have done small water changes through out the week.
Mondays and Fridays and on both days 8% of the total water volume of my DT tank.
I'll take water out the sump just enough that the return pump doesn't suck air and replace with equal amount, about 4 gallons.
Than I clean glass and skimmer cup and 10 min I'll do it again.
I never turn the system off either on water changes or feedings.
