Hi,
I’ve already done some research but keep getting mixed results, and not much from 2020.

The most important thing for me in a wavemaker is that it is QUIET. What in your experience fits the bill?

Tunze vs vortech vs octopulse vs nero 5 vs other

Thanks!

It all depends on the size of the tank for recommendations.

Vortechs are quite on clean surfaces, but allow just a little coraline algae or algae to build up between the wetside and the glass and they start to get a little noisy, but they are awesome pumps.

Two MP10s opposed plus an extra wetside so that you can keep flow while soaking a dirty one in citric acid. No wires in the tank.

I am hopeful on the Reefwaves as gyres are great but need so much cleaning. Which reminds me...

The quietest I have heard is the Tunze Stream 3 the magnetic levitation design nearly eliminates friction and keeps the pump super quiet. The magnetic levitation design gives the pump a serious advantage over other propeller pumps or gyres in the noise department. I am sure Roger could explain more about why the design is so quiet.

I'm curious if someone could say if 2 mp40 on a mid range setting are quieter than 2 mp10 on a higher setting.

I'm also incline not to get a wave maker based off of all the moving parts. So the Mp10, mp40 makes more sense to me personally.

Yes i’ve also been wondering if running pumps at equivalent flow rates but NOT max settings would improve noise

My recliner is 2-3ft from my tank & my MP40QDs are dead silent. i hear the water movement every so often when they speed up.

Edit: They are set on Reefcrest mode to vary the flow.

It depends on the size. My Tunze are quiet, but the larger ones make a bit of a hum... they will all be like this.

Tunze are quieter overall than Vortech, but I cannot hear either of them unless I get really close and concentrate. The slight hum of my light ballast is louder, but I like it as white noise.

I have a Tunze 6055 that is completely silent. My MP40 is not noticeable unless you get close.

I’m currently sitting less than 24” away from my MP40QD at 100% and can’t hear a thing.
the new QD models are 100% dead silent

Definitely not maxspect Gyre xf350 series. They run basically silent when at a set speed but if you ramp speeds (wave modes) they make a funny deep “weeeeooo” noise. It’s not super loud by any means (you have to be listening for noises while things are quiet) but if you want no noise at all, look elsewhere.

everyone should state if their pumps are quiet using wave modes and not just set speed (I’d assume most are). I’ve noticed the same with MP10QD in the past. Can’t hear it unless it’s changing speed, which was quieter than the Gyres speed change noise but I could still hear it.

I have also seen Nero in person and couldn’t hear it but haven’t owned one to have an opinion on it.

Nero 5.

mine actually got turned off a few weeks back while I had a heater issue and I didn’t realize they shut down for a couple of weeks....because they are silent.

I pulled it out of the tank without removing the magnet so it went back in in the same location and was easily disassembled for cleaning. I reset it and had to watch the find to make sure it was turning on.

Silent.
