We've discussed a bit about concerns over naming of coral before, and names do tend to add hype to an otherwise average coral.

Has the "rainbow" tag and the "watermelon" tag gone too far? As hobbyists, what can we do about names getting in the way of the hobby as far as prices and overall confusion?

Cool paint job, but you can find threads where this has been previously discussed and if my memory sustains me, they were all closed.

yeah I tried explaining to people that a rainbow has 7 colors ALWAYS not 2 or 3 or sometimes 5 but ALWAYS 7 they just dont get it just because your new chalice is orange green and red does NOT make it a rainbow

When is a rainbow a "rainbow" then? I'm not saying you're right or wrong; I'm just wondering what can be done. I agree that it's silly when you see something with two or three colors being called rainbow.

I think a marine biologist needs to step up, write a book, and clearly define these terms for the hobby so that we have something to go by....cause right now, hobbyists are doing the naming and making a mess :)

Honestly I never looked at rainbow as a tag to obtain higher $. I look at rainbow as more of a description. I see several vendors on here that have 3 rainbow acans listed and they are all different. So instead of calling it a blue/green/red acan and then a purple/orange/red acan they just list them as rainbows.

Ultra Rainbow, now that's a different story....:ooh:

A marine biologist would just call them multi-colored acans...

i saw a listing the other day, guy was trying to sell 30 some things, all crappy and brownish red. Everything was ULTRA this and that. Then he had Ultra Ultra Ricordeas, what the heck where do they get this crap

I see that a lot with clams.. "Ultra" clams are usually the clams I see every day...when I think of "Ultra", I want to see some CRAZY one-of-a-kind stuff.

but again...what can be done about it? How is this problem fixed?

It's probably rated by how they purchase it.

A-lot of wholesalers do classifications like, substandard, standard, ultra.
Substandard could be a brown chalice, standard could be a green chalice, ultra could be a green chalice with red eyes or watermelon.
You never know, they may just be claiming what the wholesalers are and not making up 'ultra' on their own.

+1....
