Random Flow Generator Show Off Thread - Show us your Tank!

Newly setup 6 foot 125 gallon softie/LPS system. Using two 3/4 inch nozzles on 3/4 inch sea swirls.

Looks like you're off to a great start. Lots of sandbead space for some awesome LPS.
What kind of GPH will you be pushing though the two 3/4in RFGz nozzles?

Each sea swirl/nozzle combo is fed by it's own Rio 2500(872GPH) which are throttled back about a third with a ball valve on the output of the pump. Add that to the 3 feet of head loss and I'm not sure. I would guess somewhere between 400-500GPH. I may open the valves up a bit more to see how they do. I was throttling them for two reasons. One 1600GPH total flow is more than I wanted through the sump and I was trying to eliminate the nozzles sucking air from the surface(which they still do occasionally)

Sounds like you should have plenty of flow to really get the RFGs working - that great.

I have an IM Nuvo 40 tank I'm currently am keeping mostly LPS, (multiple acros, Duncan's, a candy cane trumpet, a torch, some zoas, toadstools, mushrooms, a pair of small chalices, and some rock flowers, fish would be a fire fish, D.Tang, fox face and a pair of clowns, couple peppermint shrimp that may be leaving soon, a blood shrimp, and a pair of sand sifting conchs)

I have the stock return pump going to the two flairs on each side and I added a wave link mid size set on a pulse pattern turned way down to 1 or two.

I don't think I am looking for more flow, but I am looking for better more efficient flow and these seem like they may be the ticket. The flairs seem to directional and unnatural to me and seem to fight with the wavelink and defeat why I got it... random flow. I was debating changing the wavelink to a MP10, but this may be a better option before I spend that much $$$.

Would you please tell me the correct parts I would need to order to switch to RFG's and any suggestions to improve this setup would be appreciated.

The RFGs would be a good choice to achieve the kind of flow you're after. For that tank, you'll needing a 19mm Slip-Fit Drop adapter and a 1/2in RFG nozzle for each outlet. You'll find those parts here:

As for the pump - the stock pump will be a bit weak for 2 RFGs, but will work. You'll get much better results with a larger pumps, such as the 500+ GPH version of the IM Mightyjet DC pump or even the Sicci 1.5

What size RFG would I place on a reefer 170? I am running a varios2 return on the 4th setting, so running higher gph than what RS states.. cycling my tank, so have nothing in there and pretty open scaping. Thanks

If you're running high-flow in the 170, then I would definitely suggest the Ultimate Red Sea Reefer Return Line Upgrade kit, with the dual 1/2in RFG nozzles.

OR - another interesting configuration you can try, is a single 3/4in RFG at around 500-800 GPH. For this, you'll want to skip the Slip-Fit-Drop adapter and go with the 25mm to loc-Line adapter, a few segments of 3/4in Loc-Line and a single 3/4in RFG. This option creates big pronounced flow pattern, that can almost be wave-make like.

Thanks for the info!! I am trying to keep a small foot print in the tank and have a nero 5 in there.. so i do get some great flow in the tank.. if I am just looking at the single slip-fit-drop adapters.. should i go for 1/2 or the 3/4 or does it matter much? probably around 600ish flow

The Single 1/2in with the Slip-Fit Drop will work , and look great - but you may have a hard time pushing 600 GPH though it. If you dont mind a but of back pressure, it will work. Or, if you have a DC pump, just dial it back just a bit.

The 3/4in with the Slip-Fit Drop will have a similar flow issue, due to the Slip-Fit Drop adapter (the Drop Adapter is the limit factor), but I think it will flow better than the 1/2in at that flow rate. With tat said, the 3/4in RFG with the Slip-Fit-Drop adapter is considerably larger than the 1/2in version. If you goal is to minimize the footprint, it may not be the better choice.

Here's an image that might help you decide - these are the three possible configurations. All shown attached to the stock Red Sea Reefer nozzle assembly.

Just added (4) 19mm Slip-Fit drop adapters and (4) 1/2" RFG nozzles to my Innovative Marine SR-60 and very pleased with the fit and finish. Some pieces took a little bit of elbow grease to attach to the bulkhead, but everything is nice and tight. The flow up near the surface looks great and seems to be nice and varied around the tank.

Would love to see some video of just the Nozzle flowing the tank :)

Nice! - those RFG nozzles are randomizing nicely. The only issue I see is with the RFG at the 3rd position from the left - It could use a small angle tweak, to get it to randomize even better. I would suggest you adjust the angle of the nozzle on the attachment just a tiny bit. once you get it lined up just right, you'll see it randomize as much the the one at the 2nd position.
