I have an Achilles and Fiji foxface in the quarantine tank for 3 weeks now. I quarantine them with Cupramine ar 0.45 ppm increased over 10 days and did not seem to have any negativr effect.

They were eating pellets like no tomorrow since day 1.

Last 3 days I observe the reduction in appetite and today the foxface stopped eating.

They seem to be breathing fast. There are no visual symptoms of ich, velvet, slime or bacteria infection. What is the possible cause? I dose Prazipro today thinking it may be fluke but I did not see anything falling off the fish.

Can Brooknylle has no visual symptoms?

Please help!

Can you post your parameters? Rapid breathing could be parasites in the gills, or it could be oxygen related. Do you have a powerhead pointed towards the surface for gas exchange?

The circulation is very good and there is no ammonia present. They have been with me for 3 weeks now and was doing really good until the last few days.

How much prazipro did you dose? And did you remove your copper treatment first? Prazipro is known to suppress appetite and deplete oxygen

I dosed Prazipro according to the instruction today due to the rapid breathing and lost of appetite. I only dosed Cupramine from the beginning.

+1 on this @Crabs Mcjones The powerhead needs to be actively agitating the surface of the tank water to increase O2 exchange. Also, when dosing the tank with copper products, the fish's immune system can be impaired. You can dose the tank with a wide spectrum antibiotic like Kanaplex or Furan2, or Sulfaplex to deal with bacterial infection that may have set in but yet is not showing visual symptoms. Also consider adding some high quality fresh food like white or black worms, or frozen cube "smoothie". Just mix a few different frozen cubes. Let "slump" in the fridge. Pour off excess liquid. Add a few drops of vitamins like Selcon, Zoecon, etc. It will stay good in the fridge for a few days.

Humblefish has found the dose listed on the bottle of Prazipro to be a bit strong at 2.5. And has suggested 2.0 as much easier on the fish and yet gets the job done. The 2.0 dose is the same level of praziquantel that is found in General Cure. I've had very good success with the 2.0 level dose. Best of luck with your beautiful fish.

I use a decent size wave maker in the quaranrine so the water moment is very strong. I am just wondering if it can be Brooknylle, Gill fluke or bacteria infection so I can decide how to proceed. The fish is in copper for 3 weeks now and 2 weeks at above 0.4 ppm and was doing quite well. What should be my treatment plan now? I dosed Prazipro on top of copper today just to eliminate the possibility of gill fluke.

Is the water turning cloudy? Mixing Prazipro with copper can cause a bacterial bloom, which depletes O2 in the water.

Also, what test kit are you using to measure Cupramine?

I used Hanna color meter to test for Cupramine. The water is not cloudy and I just added Prazipro less than 24 hours ago. The problem began before the dosing of Prazipro. Achilles tang still eats but not as eager as before and the Fiji Foxface used to be a pig stopped eating completely.

I am wondering what to do next? Shoud I move them to a clean tank and dose antibiotic? CP? Or leave them in Cupramine and dose antibiotics. I have Metronidazole, Furan-2, Sulfaplex, Kanaplex, CP, Prazipro, Neoplex and Actiflavine at my disposal.

By the way, I did saved the Powder Blue and Hoppo tang with your recommanded treatment of Sulfaplex and Metronidazole. Thanks a lot

Some fish just don't like Cupramine. Do you have access to a chelated copper like Copper Power?

I think you are probably right about the possible bacteria infection. I had to treat multiple fishes that for infected during the copper treatment. I am just wondering if it can be fluke or Brooknylle that must be treated by other medication.

I got the fish for 3 weeks now and they have been doing reallt well in Cupramine until the last 2-3 days.

Honestly, bacterial infections are running rampant and don’t show any sores or obvious visual signs other than behavioral changes until about 24-48 hours before they die (too late for antibiotics to work)

I worry that’s what you’re dealing with they’re everywhere right now.. I’ve had it wipe out three quarantine tanks in a matter of 24-60 hours.

I never would have suggested prophylactic antibiotics until seeing how ugly these infections are and how common they are this past 6 months. Something is very wrong in the distribution system.

I certainly hope not since I have had these fish pass 3 weeks now. The Achilles tang still feeds and the foxface just stopped today. They are breathing faster than normal but not laboring. I am hoping to rule out fluke (which I dosed Prazipro today) and Brooknylle so I can focus on the right treatment.

This sounds like what happened to @HotRocks and I on at least 3 occasions.

The two most recent wipeouts were on day 14 and day 27 of copper if my memory serves. Before I know the other time or two it’s happened was also during the 30 day copper period.

With velvet as common as it is now, not treating in copper or CP isn’t really an option either.
