Rate my skimmate

It was my understanding the OP has an external skimmer, but placed in the sump to conserve on space?
Can a external skimmer be used as a in sump skimmer does it require a pump to feed the skimmer as well as a pinwheel pump to create bubbles or does it require a specific water level

With external skimmer, it doesn't matter what depth.

Were talking about internal skimmers where water depth dictates how the skimmer skims.

I'm talking about the water level inside the skimmer body. Its 9" below the top of the collection cup overflow.

Are you using the skimmer as an external skimmer ? Is the skimmer completely sealed off from the water in the sump making the water level in the sump irrelevant or am i misunderstanding something ?

can this skimmer be used as a in sump skimmer or does it still require a feed pump ?

Correct. The skimmer is external, but can be run in the sump, which is how I have it because of space limitations under the tank.

The water level in the sump doesn't impact the skimmer since it uses a separate pump to get water into the skimmer. Water level inside the skimmer body is controlled by the pump and the gate valve on the output pipe.

You could try to open gate valve bit more, to produce dryier foam,.but, in some cases, this can cause just foam to be ejected into cup, meaning big mess few times a day...

Struggle that i have now..... For the love of god i cannot adjust it other than super wet skimm :) (another brand of skimmer)

Ah yes these are really cool! Thanks for the link ;) I'd consider one of these. How long have you had it? Are you satisfied? Very curious; sorry to divert the thread

I have no experience with sumps other than this one. Good thing is that it worked well right away. I didn't really have to adjust anything. But, you're kind of stuck with the configuration of their sump, and have to work around that if you want to add new equipment.

But there are a lot of things I would have done differently if I had known then what I know now. I ordered one with a single filter sock holder, then realized I needed two filters socks for this tank. So, I had to cut the top off the filter sock chamber, discard the sock holder, and rig up a system to hold two socks.

Also, the stock version only has a 1/2" drain between the refugium and the return chamber, which really limits how much water I can run through the fuge. They now sell an "upgrade" drain that is 1-1/2". I will soon switch over to the larger drain size.

Ok. Yeah I can see how they have it plumbed on the sides, perhaps there being a bottleneck; definitely go as big as you can there. I have limited sump exp as well but I'm also stuck with how mine is configured (made it myself with a kit); but at least you can drill it and modify it; maybe use a plastic welder here n there... Interesting option to say the least when I do an upgrade eventually. Thanks

I'm using it internally. The skimmer body is completely sealed. No matter where you put the skimmer - external or internal - it will require a feed pump. It has a separate pump, which came with the skimmer, to produce the bubbles.

I’m from Lafayette my wife is from New Orleans. Currently living in Charleston sc trying to get back that way.
What about you?

Tank’s been running since August 2021. First time using a skimmer.

Reed Octopus 110ext Recirculating Skimmer.

I just put the skimmer in the sump yesterday afternoon and let it run undisturbed all night. From what I understand, there is usually a break-in period for new skimmers.

I just don’t know if the skimmate is too wet, just right, or a normal product of a skimmer breaking in.

Get those bubbles down with turning air control so they are just below the neck. Too much water is in the mixture. Should end in the cup as foam which then looks like chocolate malt

Nice! I’m in the coast guard, I was stationed at the Cg station on the south shore of the lake and lived in destrehan. Currently waiting on orders to Coast guard cutter Pamilco on the NASA base. Or Mobile AL, where ever they send me.

The NASA base at Michoud?

Would bringing the water level in the skimmer body accomplish the same thing?

Yes. . . water line below the neck and foam will then rise and eventually reach the top of the cup and create that yucky liquid collected

I’ve been at NASA a few times. Be prepared to be in the middle of junkyards and nothing else.
Yea I’m familiar with it. Just trying to get back there and then retire
