Most reefers go through it, we're human, we don't have patience :) Tangs are more susceptible to diseases such as crypto and they stress easier because they really hate being confined to smaller systems. Most tangs swim great distances everyday in the wild, they can just swim away from the parasites and remain healthy, but once they get into a closed system, they cannot out swim the little jerks and well, they get that lovely flow of white spots and turn your life into a nightmare! ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS QT QT QT!!!!!! Hang in there man, your life just got easier, you learned to QT!!! Best of luck on the recovery and you may want to pick up a second hobby while you run fallow, because I for one have a hard time staring at an empty tank for 8 weeks+ !!!! And trust me, I learned the hard way too, it was brutal watching $500 + in fish die because I introduced a tang into my system without QT. Even if someone sells you a fish saying it has been quarantined, just pretend you didn't hear it and QT it!! Good luck Sir!

And it sucks!. My other hobby is indoor hydroponic growing. And during the summer I run a medium sized Aquaponic set up that raises veggies and either tilapia, blue channel cats or rainbow trout. Depending on my mood. When I start it up.
 
Lol @Steve Dillon I am going through the same thing you are. I just finished a 30 day fallow period thinking that if I dosed kik-ick I could shorten the fallow period. Well the fish have been in for 2 weeks and low and behold they are getting ick! I then find out the kik-ich is basicially as effective as snake oil:mad:! I am now preparing to do a full 72 day fallow period:(. Well I just gotta keep on going....
 
Ugh! As much as I love tangs, all this has made me less inclined to get one when I do finally get a larger tank that can support it. Are the chances of the tang getting ich just as high if you QT it prior to introducing it to the DT? What I'm getting at is, is there any way the disease can be 'born' within a previously 'clean' DT?

IMO, there's really no such thing as a "clean" DT. Ich is in every tank, and certain conditions make it manifest, and on the most susceptible species first.
 
Ich comes from infected fish.. in a completely new tank and no fish contains no ich.. it can be killed by copper or dry the tanks out.. you can also set up multiple tanks and move your fish every four days.. the ich will drop off and after you move from one tank immediately drain and clean with vinager or bleach.. I have learned a good deal about it.. tangs are not the only susceptible ones.. angels are very likely to come down with it too.. thank you @BlueDevil

Granted. With no host, there is no ich. But, fish can host ich in their gills invisibly, and can live their whole live with it never manifesting. Age, stress and other sickness can result in an infestation. Healthy fish fight off infestation.

This is much debated of course. But, to me, short of treating each and every fish introduced successfully (key word is successfully) ich is likely present. The challenge is knowing if ich is completely irradiated upon quarantining.

Just my opinion, at this moment.
 
I dont doubt that.. but always quarantine and go ahead and treat which ever way works for you... i am no expert on it but I will quarantine and treat all fish from now on..
 
I don't blame ya brother. Hang in there. Hope my post didn't read as insensitive. I'm not. I've lost some fish myself, to my own stupidity.

yea that really sucks man. i think just about every reefer thats been in the game for long enough has had to deal with ick at least once. i went for years without ever experiencing ick and then one day...yup...when i added a tang, i got ick and lost all but 1 fish as a result. it was a tuff lesson. honestly as pretty as they are i will avoid all tangs in the future. i went fallow for 85 days just to be on the safe side AND i used the kick ick at the beginning of the fallow period just to give it the shotgun approach
