Reagents Same for Hanna Phosphate/Phosphorus Checkers?

I never said it was that easy - I was making a general comment. And the numbers weren't meant to be actual numbers - but rather just illustrations. I also mentioned that there was no reason to check both Phosphate and phosphorous - (becasue they are related by a calculation).

My only point was to say that you can't just do a test with one Reagent and if its the same that proves you can use either one interchangeably (this was in one of the links provided).

For example if the real concentration of a chemical - lets call it 'X' is '1 ppm' in a tank. You may get '1' whether you use either reagent. If the concentration of 'X' is 0.01 or 10 ppm, using either Reagent may not give the same result.

I have always thought they were the same . And just a few more zeros to the number .
Which I was wrong ....

But having both reagents , one being lr phosphates .
I might try it , with expectations of a inaccurate or completely off result .

There are lr phosphate, ulr phosphate, and ulr phosphorous.

This is why I suggested calling Hanna. There are multiple versions, and models (I didnt include all of them)
 
I just tested my phosphorus with the ulr phosphorus checker .
31 ppb which I believe might be testing error (yesterday was 22)

checked with phosphorus ulr checker but used the lr phosphate reagent . Test result was 24ppb which is only 2ppb higher than yesterday .

im going to find a email for Hanna and see if the 2 reagents are the same .
There are so many variables to test errors with

is the 10ml exact
Did I shake it correctly for the proper amount of time ,
Did I get all the reagent from the package .

I posted the phone number earlier - you will get an immediate answer. Just use the appropriate reagent for the appropriate test.
 
I purchased the ULR phosphorus reagent by mistake once for my ULR phosphate checker. Did side by side tests with both reagents and gave the same results on my ULR phosphate checker.
 
From Hanna: They are looking into the question. Just a quick update, because I said I would call.
 
I've got reagent packages for both Checkers and assume they are interchangeable between the two different instruments. All are potassium disulfate and seem to be about the same amounts per package.

Direct from Hanna Technical Support: "You need to use the appropriate reagent for the appropriate checker". So - for example for the Checker with number 'XXX', you have to use replacement reagent "XXX-25". The reagents are not interchangeable. He could not explain why some people 'seem' to be getting similar results, but that that was not the way to decide whether the reagents are 'identical' or 'interchangeable' because they are NOT (Paraphrased).

You must have a godfather at Hanna; I've had no luck getting anyone to answer the phone today - maybe they don't do well with a Southern drawl, lol. Anyway, my question is answered (although I wish you had gotten an explanation from TS, not just an assertion) and thanks much.

Edit: Just got a response to my email from Hanna confirming that the different reagents are different and not interchangeable.

I talked to 'Pete' and 'Rob' - neither sounded anywhere north of the mason Dixon line (i.e. they sounded like they were from the south lol:).. I called first thing this AM. Rob - called the expert Pete. And I got the answer. I hope this helps. I didnt look it up to see whether there was a cost difference that might have swayed their opinion

As it turns out, Pete responded to my contact form this morning and I called to confirm (I'm in the Trust But Verify camp) that there is a difference. Best my research has turned up is the notion that since these reagents measure different molecules, they are not the same.

BTW, I do think Pete is probably from southern Rhode Island. Thanks again.
 
Personally I use the reagent labelled for my checker and keep enough extra on hand. There have been times though when one is sold out and the other isn't. If you look at the details of each and the MDS sheets for both reagents they are using the same method for analysis, use the same chemical for the reaction and use the same LED in each checker.. they are the same and so is the reagent. One just does the conversion to phosphate for you. my .02
 
Some fun facts. The amount of reagent in the LR PO4 test is greater than in the ULR phosphorous. In both test there is excess reagent (Hanna tech support) and the amount in envelope varies from envelope to envelope.

I ran tests shorting the reagent by 10% and the results were similar. I switched the reagents and the results were consistently similar. When I say similar I mean within the 95 % confidence interval of the device.

Hanna’s tech support advice is sound. If you buy the wrong reagent by accident, just use it up. Any slight difference is unimportant in this hobby.
 
Do both reagents say Potasium disulfate on the sachet? Is the volume of reagent the same?

The reagent weights are slightly different, but don’t remember which is which. Don’t recall whether “disulfate” is on both sachets. I did evey combination of the reagents and Checkers and got a very similar reading with all different combinations.
