Really Petco? That's torture...

The one in Niagara falls has basic flourescents with a purple cover to give it the actinic look LOL.
that is the same with every other fish tank just this like 34 or 60 gallon cube they keep for corals. Though, they dont even keep the anemones in this system, they are in another one that houses just invertebrates so the salinity is like the coral system but they sell things so fast it is probably better for the nems to be in that system anyway. Either way filters are just overflowing everywhere and it sounds so loud too.

My local petco takes pride in their husbandry. Got this lovely LTA from them a couple of weeks ago. It’s about 6” edge to edge. 13B04CB9-2B00-481D-8807-670A5BBBB4F7.jpeg

Beautiful nem! Yes some people who have a passion go out of their way to work with fish. Or even people in general who care. Unfortunately not every store or employee can or will be like that.

nice pickup, a bit bleached (usually from overseas transport so its normal) but should come back to a strong green and purple in the future. Blue IME transitions to purple with LTA as they regain their colors

Thank you! They definitely do their best to upkeep all their tanks and it shows.

I dont fault you for the "rescue" and have done similar myself at times, but as has been pointed out when we do that we are just perpetuating this situation by buying thier poorly treated animals.

I certainly hope so. I’m happy that it’s responsive and healthy. It’ll be an added bonus if it does color up!!!

My local Petco varies in the quality of health that the fish, invertebrate and coral are in. At times they had healthy animals other times not.Right now my local Petco is a not! And I would not purchase their livestock at this point in time.

It will with a little bit of time
I have however seen a nem like the one I have that was called an emerald sky long tip that looks just like what I snagged up. 66E31724-95BB-43A1-956E-535C4F8F7F97.jpeg

It is pictured with its tentacles pretty closed and on a plastic frag rack (LTA like sand) this is likely another fresh import but slightly darker than yours. Still it would get the same thing in the end more likely either turning full green or a mix of green and purple... i wish they stayed blue as well, I have had a few in my system, but they all get huge and i usually end up trading em in for store credit

I like my BTAs now because they stay a bit higher up (more sand space for low light corals). Im gonna check my 2 petco around here today and see if they have any ritteri anemone or similar for sale

Update if anyone cares. The second one I picked up on the left looks alot better. He managed to get sticky again, and crawl into a crevice and slowly opening like the first one (on the right). Was going to treat them both with Cipro but my better judgement was to just give them the right salinity and adequate lighting. So far so good! My other maroon is scoping it out because the female will not let him in the other.

Good job! I'm not confident enough to go for an anemone yet.

My local PetCo is actually pretty good -- everything I ever bought there is still alive in my current tank,,, even after several tank transfers (including the bristleworms and amphipods that came in on my PetCo live rock,,, doh!)

I now buy livestock from an LFS that I found later but think my local PetCo does a good job,,, so must greatly depend on the specific store.

Hoping for green n purple mix. I think it knew I was talking about it yesterday and it has relocated just to spite me.

That's the only concern about keeping nems. They can and will move to wherever they want whenever they want. There is no warning signs. It could be in the same spot for 2 years, and then you wake up the next morning and it moved and took out some coral on it's journey

I just don’t understand why people support big corporate chains that state how animal care is important to them when they really don’t care about anything but money in their pockets. Yes a few stores out of many will be good do to someone that cares but let’s face it they will leave and go work somewhere else as soon as they can.

Nice save op

Well good on you for " rescuing it" and hopefully you politely informed them of salinity if 1.016 not good with anemone or will do in future ? If does any good who knows.

It's a bitter sweet doing what you done as if no one bought the anemone then they less likely to get one to replace but if buy a poorly looked after/ treated animal then they made a sale and then they replace with another and same can happen again so not knocking you for what you done as that's admirable so bravo but now petco now there a demad and maybe will replace so its a catch 22 situation.danged if you do and danged if you don't
The problem with stores like this is regardless of whether people buy the creature to try and rescue it or it dies in store, the store will still get another one so maybe trying to rescue them isn't so bad. The only way the carnage stops at places like this is if they're prohibited from selling living things. It's different with things like hamsters, etc. Those creatures are just easier to take care of in store so buying those types of animals definitely keeps the bad cycle going so not buying those is a good thing. Aquatic creatures on the other hand are more difficult to care for and I'm sure they die in the tanks by the hundreds so they just restock. Those creatures need saving IMO.

I live in a place where Petco is the only retail store to purchase saltwater livestock within 100 miles. They’re aren’t that many people with tanks yet they have a huge turnover of stock. What bothers me most is they won’t place special orders. I don’t understand the business model. Seems like it would be more profitable and humane to have a small stock of basic things and order on request. Sad.
heres what I think is going on, they constantly scam parents and their little kids. A family gets some stuff the fish and inverts die, then the parents go and get more to replace them thinking its normal for fish and inverts.

100% best to support LFS around that does do proper care for their animals but lets face it most LFS arent like that either. Out of the many places i can get fish/coral in my area (NYC) i only go to about 4 or 5. Some places also only have petcos and no LFS around as they are a huge company so they are hard to avoid.
Plus if you can get a sebae for the price of a zoa, also great
