Hello,

I am having some issues with some of my acros. They are slowly receding from the base up. I am not sure why, but I think maybe because it was the move from one tank or another. However, I would assume they had settle down since the move with a week or two ago.

Anyone have any idea?

Parameter:

Nitrate 0
Ammonia 0
NItrite 0
Phosphate .03-.06
Salinity: 1.024-1.026
PH: 7.8-8
Temp: 7.75 -7.8
Calcium: 420 on Salifert 430 on Red Sea Pro
Alk: 9-9.3

They were doing fine before with good growth and slight browning, but never really recede at the base. I am at a loss. Appreciate your assistance.

Thanks. Its making me worry because I have lost a few very nice pieces during the move and now one of my deepwater is starting to receed...I hope its not because of any swing.

Has your alkalinity been stable? Sounds like it could be an alk swing. I have two tanks myself, and the parameters are not the same. I have to be careful when I move pieces from one tank to the other. Another thought that comes to mine is a change in flow from where it was to where it is now. The same could be said for the difference in lighting, however I would think flow is more likely if it's not an alk swing.

The alk did swing, but I would assume very little. It went from 9.3 to 9.1.

I believe Calcium could've swing because I am getting mix results (tests aren't expired).

450ppm to 430ppm. But I tested the 430ppm with two different test kits and multiple times while the 450ppm i only tested once.

That happened to me with A twenty frag sps order on my old tank, they all stn'd and rtn'd but I couldn't figure out why. Hopefully yours won't receed all the way. You can try covering the recession with super glue, It may stop it

Would 9.3 to 9.1 even be considered a swing?!
If so I have daily all swings!!! :)

Sps like lower alk 7.5-8

I've heard people having sps success with alk anywhere from 7 to 12.
I think it comes down to stability. Imo
My sps are very happy with 9 to 9.5

All I said is what they prefer. I didn't say they couldn't do well in 9 range. Good luck with 11-12...lol

Happened to me. Alk is the issue when it has a huge swing.
STOP using carbon. Take the carbon out.
Yes, try covering the recession with super glue or it will die out or picked by fish.

if using it, take it out now. I learned my lesson.
you can observe it yourself. See if SPS polyps start to withdraw after you add Carbon. This is the first step to tissue recession.

I took it out, but could you elaborate a little more?

Honestly, I don't see how carbon can hurt, unless you're using the more aggressive type (brs rox) and too much of it. How' bout elaborating more on how the move was done? Did you simply move the tank or did you move corals into a completely new system?

The tank was cycled first before i moved all the corals into it. the parameters were perfect when i moved it. but then they started to recede after a week or so...

How long did you let it cycle?
Parameters may be stable, though biologically the system may be unstable.

I have been having the same issue with my sps dieing of from the bottom and working its way up. The die off seemed to be moving very quickly. So last night I cut it off up above the die off area. I will try to post again in a few days about how this is working if I get a chance. And I should know something by monday.

I believe it was 2 weeks or so before I moved everything in. I basically moved the old filtration system from the old tank into the new tank, which included bioballs that were submerged in the old tank water. I tested all ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/phosphate prior to moving anything in and everything was at 0. After the move, I continue to monitor these parameters and they still show zero. This is only a coral tank with no fishes. I think when I first tested the system, calcium was at 450. I think it dropped in the last week or so.

I have an ATO set up and I just added kalk to the top off water. I hope this will help stabilize the calcium/alk.
