Red sea reef led 50 problems

Sorry to hear about your Red Sea LED 50/90 issues. I have two 90's with absolutely no problems.. I'm happy with mine.
Power went out one day and the lights did disconnect from the app even after power was back on.. Lights kept working on my schedule even though it was not connected to the app..
Make sure you moniter the temperatures on the power supplys they get extremely hot mine got up to 180-190f

They sell 3 different arms, I have a 425xl with 2 LED 90's and they sit in the middle of the tank(front to back 22.6") I assume that Red Sea make the arms to suit their tanks.
Okay, you may have one that I am not aware of. My LFS only had two different mounts and I previous had this one on another smaller setup. This was the larger of the two at the time they had. I will look into it more. Thank you for the information!

Ive got a 60g cube 24*24*24. The light arms available do not reach far enough out to center over the tank and do to their attachment hardware you are pretty much locked into their arms only.
I tried the red sea 90 mount same thing it wouldn't center in my tank. I purchased 4 of the 90's for my new tank before I was having trouble and i quickly returned then while I still was able to at BRS. Been rough with red sea products had some RS coral pro salt all test at 18dkh and the magnesium was at 2100. test kit that the dropper on the bottle wasn't seated properly and leaked all over everything. The best issue I've had to far with them is a RS reefer 425 XL leak on me 2 months after I got it the whole front panel fell off. Red sea wouldn't do anything.

I've had the "disconnect" issue twice in 4 months. I've found that in both instances it was because the time stamp in the app changed to the wrong time, so it thought it was time to be off. Once i fixed the time to what it was in my area, it all started working perfectly again.

Agree

Too bad the they weren't hot at night. I add some thermal tape and attach them to my sump for heat exchange saving wear on the heat ;) lol

Red sea mad it seem like I was doing something wrong. The light is junk. I sold mine I took a $90 loss on it but I'm so much happier with the ai prime 16hd on my 14 gallon im nuvo peninsula. Red sea gave me such a hard time cause I bought it on amazon. Bought it from a authorized red sea seller on amazon. I had to pay for shipping both ways. If I bought it directly from the seller's website I would have gotten a "official" receipt and they would have covered shipping.
I have the original receipt, i bought them from brs and have reported the issue twice (today is going to be the third) to red sea and they make it sound line its not a big deal just take the battery out and thats it. I really dont want to be dealing with this every two weeks, ill check if i can work something out with red sea or brs because i dont want them.

I installed 3 of the 90s on a customer tank. Once a month one or more will disconnect and stop working. Sometimes, just a power cycle will bring them back, other times I have to hard cycle them.

You can do this without taking them apart. It is difficult with just two hands though. While holding down the settings button, you very quickly disconnect & reconnect the DC plug in quick succession. Just long enough to see the red settings light flash on/off. After the third reconnect, release the settings button. The light will then reconnect and run your program. Until it fails again in a few weeks. PITA, but better than taking it apart.

Personally, I think their skimmers are just as bad as their lights. In Red sea sumps, you have to put them on a 4 inch platform to keep them from overflowing. I have not had any issues with their tanks so won't speak to that.

As per red sea, yesterday their server for the reef beat app had issues and it had to be shutted down, Creating connectivity issues. A team in Israel is working on this issue right now. New hot fix will come later tonight or tomorrow morning and if it keeps happening well then the issue is the router in your house, i guess everybody that owns red sea led has router issues right.

Ill give that a try because it is really annoying to keep taking it apart, i can imagine that for you is worse because it is a customer you have to respond to. Definetly after this and what you said about the skimmer i wont be buying red sea products. I guess their quality department got fired or something.

This could explain the issues I was having the other day before finally taking mine offline. Maybe I'll try bringing them back up over the weekend and see how they respond. thanks for the update!

Hi Folks,
Red Sea sent out an email to registered customers of the LEDs. If you are having the "Disconnect" problems (As we did) you will want the new firmware:

We also recommend you install our newly released ReefLED firmware 1.8.1:
This new release resolves the “Boot-Freeze” issue, which required taking out the battery in order to restart it. It supports the new functionalities in the Device Manager and improves the device connectivity.
New firmware releases are on their way to further improve performance so keep updated…

These lights have been an absolute nightmare and the single biggest disappointment of anythingI've purchased in over 20 years in this hobby (let alone for something I paid over $1000 for (for 3).

Edit: I honestly hadn't checked the power supply until reading another thread that described them as having an EXTERNAL temperature of nearly 200 degrees so I ran down like a lunatic past my wife and children to check and mine were indeed burning hot, so hot that it had literally melted a zip lock bag that was touching it!!! On top of being a waste of $1000 it almost burned my house down.

What kind of quality control do they have!?!?!

Double edit: good Lord now I'm readying about aquariums that they make that cost multiple thousands of dollars that aren't probably supported by the stand that they themselves designed AND other instances where the aquariums literally fall apart due to silicone failure?

The worst purchase ive mad aswell. I have sold them on offer up after fighting with red sea for a whole week. They told me i would have to pay for shipping to get them "fixed".

Unfortunately, that seems to not help the disconnecting issues with the ReefLED50. I was unlucky enough to have this light included with my Red Sea MAX Nano. I was expecting a light more on par with AI Prime 16 HD (no pun intended). This is really silly, because from what I can see this is a simple ESP32 module by Expressif. It's not my network either because I pay as much to have it as a managed service as I did for this tank. I can see it online for a period of time and I can search it's records on and offline going back for the month I have had it. It does not appear to be stable and I'm wondering if the ESP32 module is having a power or thermal issue... Too strange....

If you filed a ticket with RedSea support, curious what they had to say. The 90s we manage have settled down the past couple months -- even before I updated them really. Can't say why though.

Hello everyone new to this forum,
Im having issues with my red sea reef led 50w. It keeps disconnecting and when I went into settings to turn off the light to do maintenance. It wouldn't turn on. Red sea told me to reset to factory settings and that will fix it. It did not work seems to be that the time zone in the app wrong. Reset the light, deleted the app and reinstalled it and added the light again. Anyone having these issues. Also the power supply reaches 175-185F. Light only works in manual mode, none of my lighting schedules work. When I go to reset the time on the app it does nothing.
If it’s any good to you, my Reefled 160s intermittently turn off for a few seconds and back on again. I have witnessed it 3 times, others have noticed it too. Worrying to say the least. I’m going to disable the auto off feature when the arm is raised just in case it’s a bug with the sensor.

It sucks to see im not the only one with this issues my lights keep disconnecting every two weeks at least. I have to keep taking the lights apart, removing the battery and reconnecting them. Red sea tries to make this sound like no big deal but this is not what i paid for, i wish i could return this piece of crap and get the hydras instead.
Same. I’ve had mine 4 months now so can’t replace them. I’m stuck with 3x 160s. I came from GHL mitras. Never a single issue with them so tempted to put them back up. What a massive waste of money. Red Sea just keep asking me to reset them. Blaming my WiFi. Absolute joke. Never buy a fist generation product. The doser also acts up and stops dosing and disconnects from WiFi. It’s freezing. I know because I can see it on my network actively connected yet it goes completely unresponsive. Only a full reset will bring it back. I get weekly notifications that either my lights or doser have disconnected. I wouldn’t mind if they continued with their schedules, but most of the time they don’t. Nightmare situation.

I’m convinced that the ESP32 module is timing out. They use the same module in the doser too. Interesting you say it could be thermal related. i wonder if anyone has tried thermal pads or mosfet heat sinks on the chip to rule It out?
