For those that have dealt with red turf algae, what have you found to be effective in eliminating, or at least controlling it? I'm looking for critters that might eat it as manual removal is not feasible.

How bad is it? Pictures would help!

I’ve had it bad twice, after using chemiclean usually just goes away on its own.

Any daylight pictures of your tank? I had turf algae after a crash and there were a couple of factors that changed and I can say I’m 100% free of it now. My tank crashed killing my sps and most likely all of my microfauna and bacteria. Hair algae was growing but I have undetectable nutrients( understandable that the algeas were eating it up) I added a kole tang who loved to eat the hair algae. The kole devoured the hair algae and left space for the turf to grow and I could even see bits of bryprosis grow and bubble algae. A month of two have still gone by and not a single sight of copepods or microfauna (assuming good bacteria was also wiped out) . I added 3 emerald crabs to my cleanup crew which only consisted of Bert it’s and turbos. They tried to get the turf off but it’s just so strong that they didn’t make a dent. I then added 2 tuxedo urchins and a verrigated, they seemed to go around and possibly ate some. My kole tang was acting lethargic but eating and eating but passed away. I was concerned that there wasn’t microfauna, so I had gotten fresh cheato from a members tank which had a booming population. With the death of the tang, the urchins the addition of pods and bacteria, I am relieved to say that my rocks are barren from the algae, all without taking the chemical route. I always believe in good water changes and let the tank do it’s thing.

My urchins won’t touch it, I use hydrogen peroxide to keep it in check. I turn all of the pumps off and spray about 3ml’s every day on a section and it dies. I really need to take the rocks out and do a whole rock at a time. I used Vibrant for a month following the instructions and it didn’t phase it.

I have had my nano 28 for about a year and a half now and about 4 months ago, I had this very same algea in my tank. It wasn't very tall, but it was growing on a lot of my rocks and spreading. In my opinion, it spread more because I was after it constantly with a toothbrush, trying to remove a lot of it or at least keep it from getting so tall. I was getting sick of the stuff so I ordered some Chemiclean. Before I received it, I was using hydrogen peroxide on my toothbrush when I did the scrubbing. I decided to move a large chunk of rockwork and put it on top of the worst part of the algea and for some reason the stuff started to die and release from the rocks! In a matter of a few weeks I had ZERO algea and it has never came back. I never used the Chemiclean in my tank. It is still in the box. I have no idea on what happened in my water, but nothing else changed and nothing was affected by it dying either. I change my filter a lot to catch the dead stuff, but now my tank is clean!! Go Figure!!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

close light for 3 days, water change, remove manually, increase Ph to 8.5 and alkalinity
