I know that coraline algae can be a multitude of colors including red, but I guess I am just worried about red slime, because to my untrained eye, it looks the same.....so I am posting some pictures to get some opinions about what this red stuff is.....it's on 2 of my rocks, on the coral bed, and on the new Birds Nest I just got......any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!:)

Meds and chemicals are bad IMHO. The best way to get down and dirty and get rid of problems the old fashioned way.

Increase your circulation with a powerhead and most algae problems are caused by excess nutrients. That means overfeeding of fish and corals.

How strong of a powerhead do we need for a 36 gallon? And how often should we be feeding the fish and corals? One of our clownfish seems to be laying eggs.....how do we feed the corals and how often?

And black out, and scrub rocks, and water changes, and monitor parameters. IMHO is "in my humble opinion"

Black out for how long? And should we empty the tank of the rocks and scrub them? We did a 10 gallon water change 2 days ago.....and thank you

Blackout with tarp for 3 days and no food, skim like crazy and clean as much as possible before and after the blackout. Then big water change like 25% or more, and test for phosphates. You are using Rodi water...right?

You can brush with toothbrush in the tank, just make sure you have a filter sock or the like to catch stuff. Do not be tempted to rinse rocks with tap water (I've heard of people doing that...ouch). And stir the sandbed when siphoning.

You cold run phosgaurd in media bag....I do....but some folks swear its bad because of aluminum leaching and dropping PO4 too fast.

Good luck.

It all depends on what coral you have but with that size tank a small powerhead will work fine. As far as feeding once a day is fine ,you want fish to consume food within 2-3 minutes and food should never hit the bottom. Fish are pigs and they will eat untill they pop. They don't need much food. With that size tank your nutrients can build up quick so be stingy with the food. That also applies to feeding corals.

Sorry but I disagree with most of this.

I've never had to black out a tank for Cyano, and don't recommend it. Especially for how little of it there is in this tank.

Cyanobacteria is a bacteria, it has nothing to do with phosphates...

Brushing it with a toothbrush just spreads it and it will be back tomorrow.

Phosguard is for phosphate removal.
