Hello all,

It has been abut 10 years since I had a saltwater tank. That tank was a 125 fish only. I have recently gotten back into the hobby and have started a 40 gallon hex tank. I will be using an aquaclear 70 power filter, 2 circulation pumps, 2 heaters (to guard against failure) using an external temperature controller. I have "dead"rock for aquascaping and and crushed coral for substrate. I will be using RO water (I have a 100 GPD unit so water changes will be frequent) and instant ocean salt. I will also be using seachems Stability to help my bio grow quickly. I recently upgraded my lighting from florescent to LED lights.

My plan is to start with a mated pair of ocellaris clowns and a host anemone. Eventually (after tank matures) I hope to add some soft corals, a Falco hawkfish, a yellow tang and a few others like cleaner shrimp, maybe a crab or 2. I do plan to add livestock slowly to allow the tank to respond to increases in bio load.

I am very open to opinions and would like to hear from experienced reefers on what they think of my plans.

I also have a friend who has some ocellaris clowns that have started spawning and hope to get some of those fry to grow for him. I do have experience rearing fry as I had a freshwater discus hatchery with 35 tanks and 10 breeding pairs. The process for rearing clownfish seems similar, although more delicate for the first 2 weeks with the need for rotifers to get past metamorphosis . I have used BBS for years and and familiar with hatching them to finish out the fry.

Any and all opinions and help is appreciated.

Thanks

Troy

Hello Troy and welcome to the community.:)

I say you have a very good plan to start, one step at a time.:)

How exciting— and congratulations! I’m with you on all of that, except a Yellow Tang in a 40 gallon hex. But you’ll be doing a ton of reading here on R2R in the weeks and months ahead, and I think you will reach the same conclusion. (I brought a small Yellow Tang I had in a 6’ 90 gallon back to my LFS; got a Yellow Eyed Kole Tang instead.) Anyway, have fun!

Welcome back after a 10-year hiatus TroyClark.

Much is the same as you remember but there are many new cookies for the dark side we didn't have a decade ago.

Enjoy and keep us up to date with progress if you would good sir.

Thanks all.

I do have another question. I have a lot of crushed coral and dead rock that has been dry for about a year. It was previously used in a 125 gallon African Cichlid tank. How should I go about getting these ready for my new salt tank?

Welcome to reef2reef!

I would advise not to use crushed coral, as it's a nutrient sink. A finer grade sand would be advisable such as caribsea special grade.

If the dead rock is aragonite based, you will have to "cure" it in a tub.

Glad you joined us! (Nice basement water miximg station! I have one and love it!)

Ok. I soaked the rocks in bleach water for 24 hours, drained refilled with RO water with a heavy dose of dechlorinator. Been soaking for 2 days now. Am getting ready to rinse and refill with new RO water and dechlorinator. Should that be good?

Thanks

I have had the tank up and running for a few weeks now. I have 1 Green Chromis and 2 Mocha Gladiator clowns. Using Prime during the cycle to protect the fish. So far everything is good. No nitrites/nitrates yet. Ammonia 1ppm. Getting ready to do a 1/2 water change. Loving the clowns.
