Reef Octopus Pulse 2 or 4

I have two octo 4s in my 120g, never go higher than 30%. Any more seems too much. I amso run a gyre. Both OP4s are controlled in forward and reverse by waveengine. Great pumps and are easy to keep clean.

Wow. Going by the size of your tank compared to mine (150 gallon), OP2s would be more appropriate would you say?

OP4 at low speed is silent but if your tank is 4ft long then OP2 might be a better choice.

I would throw some OP2s on the back of my tank but they won't hold onto 3/4" glass, the OP4 does.

BTW for those worried about anything being sucked into the OP4, Ecotech came up with a fix :)

You need one for each and a rubber band. I rarely take them off to clean.

Never had anything sucked in.

What is the size of your tank? I have 4*2*2 foot and was considering 2 OCTO4 on the lowest settings, will be too much? I am worried 2 OCTO2 will not be enough or running them on highest setting all the time will reduce their life expectancy

I've had the two Octos running around 30-50% in a 4X2X2 tank, one on the right and one in the back on the left for flow behind the rocks on the left. I also have a XF 350 cloud on the left opposite the right OCTO4, again running no more than 50%. All are on a Hydros wave-engine SPS mode, FWIW. Water movement is great.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe heat causes precipitation which can cause a pump to freeze - had this happen in my previous tank with an AC pump that failed and I lost livestock, with a LOT of deposit around the impeller very quickly (had a Ca reactor). Now I run all critical pumps (DC) less than 50% and clean them in citric acid every couple of months (that reminds me...). I also feel the lifespan would be longer if not run at full speed.

I am not sure that a pair of OCTO2s are enough for robust flow. FWIW, I have a SICCE XSTREAM (up to 2250 mph, comparing to OP2) behind rocks on the right. While it provides good flow, I don't think a pair of those would be sufficient for primary flow in the tank, perhaps unless run closer to 100%.

I was using only one but had an MP40 on the other side. I actually quit using the Octo on my tank because the flow was killing the corals close to it (on lowest setting).

It's a very reliable, quiet and super strong pump. Just wouldn't work for me because there's no open spaces in my tank anymor

Thanks for this, I believe it will be pair of OP40 for me. Mine is mixed Reef.
