Reef Squad

To make clear;
My goal here is to resolve this, in this thread, whatever it is. I’m trying first to understand where everyone is coming from and what their goals are. I am confidant that I know why everyone in the RS posted here (we all “work” together and have an established history and familiarity), so please don’t take me not asking them anything as some sort of focused attack or indifference - it is not. I am interested in hearing any ideas that could further my stated goal above, but will primarily focus on @Eggs and @MnFish1 as they seem the ones most actively aggrieved, but am happy to hear from anyone.

Appreciate it, and it was never meant to go this far. This thread and the thread in the “Lounge” section have similar issues being pointed out, regarding some officials (using the term for mods, RS, staff etc)
A specific RS post was perceived as inappropriate by multiple people, which got swept aside with the help from other officials when the issue was brought up. When the RS poster responded to explain, some statements not needed were also inappropriately included which just fueled the fire.
If you haven’t read through the other thread I encourage you to do so. It seems some of the R2R team are ignoring concerns brought up by multiple members. I don’t know why certain officials feel they are above everyone else, which was spelled out clearly.
Can discuss more, but it’s probably better to shelve it at this point.

I think its a little weird for you to be paraphrasing my post - and then asking me if its right.
I do this because words can be misleading. What I’m doing is generally referred to as “seeking understanding”. When I can tell you what you told me with my own words, then we should be able to agree that I understand what you’re trying to tell me. Without that, we can’t know that I read your words the way that they were meant to be heard. A bit of a tangent; but there are studies that have shown that more than half of our ability to understand meaning is based on visual cues. It’s one reason why more misunderstandings occur over the phone, in writing, and on the Internet than in person.
So when I aim at resolving a conversation challenge, I seek to achieve actual understanding first. That - like many good things in this hobby - is a slow process.

I'll throw out a wild idea since I somewhat agree the whole Reef Squad / Excellence thing can cause some issues and a cliquish feel to the site. Perhaps the forum should move to a tank rating system where a users tank receives a public star ratings with count. Someone with 100,000 five star votes on their tank for example would be infinitly more meaningful IMO than a Reef Squad banner. Now the public can choose instead of insiders...

Isn't there a point system?

Very interesting proposal.

Very interesting proposal.

But can’t really be implemented well. The subjective “quality” (rating) of ones tank does not necessarily describe the persons knowledge level.

Like for example, some people may have a few corals in a vase; and yet still believe that they are God’s gift to reefers.

Thank you, again, for you continued involvement.

Do you feel like your posts were fully understood? Or do you feel like some (perhaps all) of your posts were misconstrued in some way that did not benefit the conversation?

Like for example, some people may have a few corals in a vase; and yet still believe that they are God’s gift to reefers.

Your example assumes someone is rating themselves. I believe the rating system proposed would be based on other members voting for them.

But I agree others voting might have a subjective view on what is a 1,2,3,4 star tank ect. And yes a rating doesn't necessarily describe a person's knowledge level, but neither does a badge or banner.

Lol. A few corals in vase could certainly be awesome! With enough volume in votes the subjectivity of a few odd votes will be balanced out. I'm pretty sure all of the Reef Spotlight tanks would have high ratings. That is the idea. There are a lot of people out there with beautiful tanks whose opinions are overshadowed by people with banners that don't require proof.

It might also make sense to time weight the votes and allow ratings for multiple tanks with an average displayed under the users name publicly and tank level rating detail within the users profile.

But like...... I have incredible tanks, but my personality makes me not really fit for reef squad. I am too quick to make an inappropriate joke, and/or clash with someone.

I have no idea what you're talking about you clashing or making jokes, doesn't sound like you at all:rolleyes:

;Hilarious;Hilarious;Hilarious

I think it was more in response to someone saying the RS doesn't always hand out sound advice and this rating system might be a better way for someone to look at and gauge whether or not they feel like the person giving said advice is atleast on face value, knowledgeable.

Now obviously there are flaws to this system like any others but at face value atleast it's a different way to go about gauging things so to speak.

Hmm so the question now becomes, will people give your tanks low ratings since they might not like your tone / response even though they are indicative of high skill. Interesting and probably. I can also see people with so so tanks being given high ratings to make them feel good by the hospitality folks.

I guess this would only work if the ratings were blind, but then ultimately you could figure out the owner with some quick research.

Like I said. Wild idea. But the point is, it would be nice to see more people with awesome tanks with banners if that's the route the site is sticking with.
