Reefers! What is Your Profession?!

Geographic Information Scientist (GIS), 20 years

I mostly worked on industrial commercial remediation. A variety of contaminants (metals, PCBs, SVOCs, PAHs, PFAS, PFOAS, radiation) in all the matrices (biota, soil, sediment, surface water, groundwater).

Also did a bunch of work in support of permitting and compliance, energy, transportation, threatened and endangered species, and 3 dimensional conceptual site modeling.

Now I am on the IT side promoting GIS governance and quality for a large global consultancy.

It helps with reefing because I work with a lot of science hippies from multiple fields, and I get to learn from them.

I also have an extensive collection of hair nets and name tags from 15 years in the restaurant business prior to getting into GIS.

I’m a business analyst turned project manager. But now I consider that my side job … I’m a coral farmer!

I think it’s actually reefing that has helped in other aspects of my life create a better balance. That’s because if you neglect those parts of your life, like your relationships or your health … it’s the equivalent of a tank that looks horrible filled with Dinos and dead corals. I even like to use reef jargon when it comes to basic things like cleaning up the house
“Living room po4 seems a little high. Time for a water change”

28 year old.

Unemployed ‍♂️. I used to run multiple dispensaries left due to poor pay. I have a software development certificate, ive built out a few websites, still looking for an opportunity. About to start teaching swim lessons in a few weeks

Jack of all trades, master of two. ASE Certified Master Tech in automotive & med/heavy truck.
But over the years I’ve done a bit of everything that requires building stuff, including a few years as a millwright in the 90’s.

It helps in every way. I do plumbing, electrical, cabinet making - you name it.

I’m a plumbing apprentice and I’m currently helping build a new hospital. I’m still trying to figure out how to apply it to this beautiful hobby
It will totally help plumbing a sump!

I’m a car guy…. First 15 yrs out of high school I did auto upholstery…. Stock and custom interiors, convertible tops and such. The last 14 years I’ve been an hvac tech.

So my jobs have always been hands on work. So reef tank plumbing electrical, and framing and such are nothing out of the normal.

ER nurse, I find a lot of satisfaction in conflict resolution and blood/reef chemistry, of course I had to grab all of the Hanna testers I could find for all of the quantitative data. I’ve had my 20 gallon cube for about a year, still learning the process which is also very true with nursing.

Cell biologist in a university Med school. We do mostly live cell microscopy studying intracellolar membeane trafficking. Reefing compensates my initial plan to be a marine biologist that never materialized. I do work a lot with fluorescent proteins all of which came from the sea.

Chemist/Drug Discovery and Drug Delivery. Polymeric Pharmaceuticals.
Dang. I never new that you do delivery. I got a long list of pharmaceuticals we could collaborate on? :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: Mostly recreations stuff, but occasionally I could use some antibiotics for the reef. THis is awesome! o_O:cool:

I'm a Forensic Cyber Security Analyst for the medical field
That's cool.
I got a check in the mail for $100.00 from a settlement when my health care provider got hacked. We started getting phone calls asking us to pay up on a balance from some hearing aids that I returned. Many, many calls and other scams resulted from that hack and the $100.00 barely covered the frags I needed from the stress it caused. :face-with-hand-over-mouth:

We just had an endo/exocytosis & protein transport quiz the other day. The kids were not happy :face-with-tears-of-joy:
