Reefing future- what is yours?

My wife and I like supporting the community. For the past 10+ years we, and before that I, have supported schools, colleges, clubs, Public Aquariums and local reefers. We have (2) 180g outdoor frag tanks that are just for growing corals to trade and give away.

When we had a wipe out last March it was devestating to fill trashcans full of literrally 1000s of pcs and 100's lbs of corals that could have helped beginners, or those that had suffered a crash.

Starting over from scratch, and setting up a new barren 750g it's hard to imagine how long it will take to get those frag tanks filled and over producing again. So far we have about 20 pcs of coral outside in one frag tank, a few of which are starting to grow out well.

As for display tanks in 5 years -- Well we aren't going any bigger in our current house than our new 750g. We need to win the lottery or my parents need to pass before we can go bigger.

We did buy a 200g cube tank system for my wife to start a semi-retirement program of breeding clownfish. We have all the equipment and the rack is assembled but the system needs to be moved into my office and get loaded with some breeding stock.

As much as I love my new 750g I also love the angels that are in it. I would love to find someplace to setup a lil 50-90g tank for all those lovely LPS that the angels in my display tank munch on. I keep contemplating taking out the unused shower in the guest crapper and putting it right there in front of the throne.... Time will tell.

I've been trying to get as many miles out of my 40G as possible which since it's going on 10 years I don't think it owes me anything at this point. Last year I updated all the equipment save the tank itself and I've tried to make my purchases with a future tank in mind. For instance, I just installed a reef octo varios 2 which has to be dialed down for this present day tank but might work out for a larger future tank or for my skimmer at the very least. Future goal is to upgrade to a larger system probably around 150G and plumb that out to a room where I can deal with everything. Only thing stopping me right now is space as I am in a small apartment. When the time comes hopefully, moving the 40G shouldn't be too bad and Id like to be able to have it setup while I take my time getting a larger system dialed in before adding corals and retiring the 40G. Long story short, bigger tank, maybe a frag tank too. Unfortunately I gotta buy a house first.

My plan is to eventually upgrade my 50 Gallon AIO to a 4ft 90 or 120 with an in-basement sump. Wouldn't mind having a frag tank down there either. I've also been daydreaming of building a plywood/pond liner tank in my garage as out there it wouldn't need to meet the spouse approval aesthetic. Sucks how limited I am with fish in this 50 gallon.

Ideally build the new home with a shark tank with viewing panels in the basement and a glass panel on the top to walk over. Always wanted bull sharks, hammers, and black tips. I think it’ll probably cost around high 6 figures… let’s see, still several years out.

Taking out the carpet in the basement this fall and doing tile. I have three 80 breeders, a 50 lowboy, and a 40 breeder along with the equipment to have one dual tank set up running. My display upstairs has earned me right about $4k so far this year, but I hate having frags on the sandbed or on racks, so this system will be my overflow for frags. It would be nice to be at the point I am setting up at 4 or 5 swaps a year as opposed to 2 right now.

My big goal in this hobby is to get a large dropoff reef and fill it with things I enjoy not what anyone else thinks lol that’s why I really only go for soft coral and crazy fish!

Keep up my love of every thing marine which started in the 90s . Sorry ADDICTION LOL

I’m on a 5 year plan to upgrade from my 65 to a 120.

5 year plan is basically just seeking approval from my wife lol.
Glad I stayed single although one is trying to hint marriage. Dont need permission.
Seems like one of the biggest barriers in the hobby are Wives. . LOL
In my case I’ll be asking my hubby’s approval in 5 years I want a huge wall aquarium :grinning-face-with-sweat:

I'll probably still have the same 300 gal set up and hopefully still containing corals but who knows? I may have 2 or 3 new/different fish by then.

Will I move abroad? This means full tear down. Will my wife let me buy the car I want? I'd consider tearing it down.

Will the tank blow up? This would probably mean I never get another reef tank. :0)
