For anyone with a Red Sea Reefer 250 V3 sump interested in the ReefMat, but not to happy about the sump modifications that will cause you to lose your refugium… If you’re up for doing some silicone work, it’s possible to get your refugium wall back after you remove it. It just has to be pushed back a couple of inches.

What did you do for circulation heating while you let the silicone cure for the new refugium wall?
I was lucky enough to get my ReefMat before this system was up and running. So I just let the silicone cure before I finished setting up the tank.

Don't really need a refugium and reefmat and skimmer... Wait till you light the refugium and you have algae growing everywhere you don't want it. That sump refugium was a joke.

ReefMat and skimmers don’t serve the same purpose as macro algae. ReefMats and skimmers pull organic material from the water column. The ReefMat can’t capture super fine particles. A skimmer can. Macro algae will consume nitrates. So yes, one COULD benefit from all three. Let people do what they want. So long as they’re not doing something “WRONG”.

How long do you recommend to cure?

However long the brands instructions say to. Most commonly it’s recommended a minimum of 72 hours. A week is most ideal; but for a refugium wall 3 days is plenty!

For sure people can do what they want and we can all learn from that. Just speaking from 30 years of experience and mistakes like over filtering and bottoming out nutrients. I am a gadget nut so gotta try everything and have caused myself so many issues but hey I had fun playing with the toys. I have a Reefer 250 V3 sump and found the refugium more of an annoyance but it can work .

Thank you! Could you share a photo of your sump as it stands right now. I’m trying to do exactly what you did and trying to get a feel for how everything will fit, especially with overflow pipe.

So are you making your refugium in the skimmer chamber just before the return pump?
Yeah precisely. All together it’s a pretty tight fit. The reason I really want that divider working is it helps avoid light spillover into the other compartment. I’m thinking I would use a small 5G tank as the sump for the time being as I modify. Did you mod yours?

I just modified for the reefmat. I used the refugium for a while but it did too good of a job and threw me into so many other issues I quit the refugium. I also didn't like all the unwanted algae in my sump and skimmer. I tried blocking the light but it travels through all of the clear glass under the water also the divider doesn't completely block the light.

If I was going to do a refugium again I would drill the top off tank like others have done and I would paint or otherwise coat every side of the top off tank so no light can leak and have a small light right on top.

Makes total sense. I do have hair algae all over the place, but I just pull it out and treat as an algae sink. How did you manage the upgrade with a running tank?

It was messy but went fast and easy. I would much rather do it when the sump was out and dry but it really went fast and easy. I turned off the main pump and pulled out the skimmer. I should have drained out some water. I splashed some water out and it was a little messy getting all the bits of silicon sucked out after. I could have done a cleaner job in a couple places had I removed the sump and had better lighting. No leaks and working great. I had to mix up 10 gallons of water after I was done sucking out the bits of silicon to replace what was sucked out. I didn't plan for that.

Hmm, I just started unboxing the ReefMat. I started a refugium in area ahead of the skimmer but from what I am seeing, once I remove the filter sock area, I would lose that and need to move it to the back area?

I think my Octo 110S will still fit in here. Very helpful @DocRose

That is the way to do it if you want a refugium after the mod. I noticed you have the hose clips for the red sea doser. I could not get them to stick to my red sea stand even after cleaning with alcohol.

Those hose clips are starting to come off actually. Atleast the one on the left. Probably will replace with some 3M double sided strips. Now I just need to squeeze in a mini reactor in the sump and call it a day.
