ReefSavvy 100 Gallon Frag Tank

Got the quarantine tank setup and have two black snowflake clowns that I purchased yesterday. Clown seem happy enough. Frag tank has cycled and looked amazingly clear. Plan to get a yellow tang once the clowns are out of quarantine. Any recommendations on other fish? Bare bottom and open top so I assume that means wrasses are out.

You might be rushing into things. Most tanks arent considered cycled in two weeks. I know this is your first tank so yoy might be in a hurry to stock it up. You will still have some ammonia spikes to deal with before you add more fish. Clowns tend to be pretty hardy, however tangs can be more sensitive to new tanks. Keep the clowns alone for a while and see how things go. When they get in there and you begin to feed nutrients will bounce around for a while. Keep a steady watch on ammonia and nitrates. Before you learn the hard way.

Dr. Tim’s is going to be your best friend. As well as either more rock, or marine pure block in your sump. It will help establish a bacteria population a little quicker.
Tank looks great though! I actually am in contact with crystal Dynamics for a Tank (525g) and so far so good. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t their a big wait Time on ReefSavvy Tanks?

The rock had been soaking since mid November. I’ve been adding ammonia to it so I’m sure that helped the process. I’m not in a hurry to stock it so to speak. Doing quarantine and doing everything possible to keep the bad stuff out of the tank.

That said, here’s a few pics of my quaranatine tank and fish, along with my salt water mixing station in the garage. Finally finished plumbing it today.

Clowns have been in QT for 14 days at a Cupermine copper level of .5. I’ve read the QT tank thread and am confused. Do I go 30 days with copper or am I good at 14? Fish seem healthy and are eating good. When do I add Prazipro or do I not need to? I fresh water dipped them after purchase and didn’t see any flukes.

you can use prazipro in addition to the copper. the fish will be fine. better safe than sorry just wait out the 30 days. use the chemicals as per instructions and check that ammonia doesnt get to high. if it does do a water change and redose whatever chemicals are in use

Orange spots started showing up today on the rock and bottom of the frag tank. I assume it’s the beginnings of a type of algae I don’t want. I’ve been ghost feeding it so I wouldn’t be surprised if the nutrient levels weren’t high. Thoughts? I did pour a bottle of coralline algae into the tank a week or so ago but seem a little early for that. Agree?

You are going to get a lot of “new tank uglies” in the next few months wether you like it or not. Just have to fight threw it and take it one at a time. The spots are a algae of some sort. But rocks don’t stay white forever.

Man this is a crazy first tank, beautiful setup and ideal dimensions. As Zack said, going to go through some uglies at first. Don't rush to correct things too much (with things like gfo or dosing things), sometimes u can make things worse. Just observe and test.

I always do prazi and have never had an issue, no reason not to use it.

One of the first changes in a new tank is the development of diatoms. These algae feed on silicates which are always present in the newly started tank.
Nothing to worry about because as soon as those silicates have been consumed, the diatoms will disappear automatically. It can take some days or even more then a week before they are gone. Just keep sufficient flow in the tank (the more the better) and do not use lighting as there is still no coral that needs it.
Coralline will not develop yet in this early stage. As a matter of fact, it produces a nice colour, but is not very beneficial to the tank. Must be one of the reasons it is called coralline algae... It covers rock and reduces the porosity of that rock. Which makes it less effective for beneficial bacteria to grow inside the rocks. In other words, the rock becomes less live rock.

Well... Been a while since I posted. Tank is doing good overall. Out of the 15 frags, 12 made it and are doing well. Back in May, the clowns decided to go carpet surfing. By the time I found them, only one was still alive. Since then, we've had no issues with the tangs aggressiveness. (I'd post pictures, but need to get a filter for the camera.)
