I wonder how many people would change their tune if they'd actually tried the h380 LOL. Everyone's got a budget, I get that; and it would certainly not be the first thing I'd buy for a tank .....

$12 insane grow light. Not only do I run one on all 3 of my tanks and harvest chaeto bi-weekly, I have countless friends and customer's that have purchased one and are sharing in same results. Currently have 0 nitrates in all three of my tanks and have to dose sodium nitrate just to feed the fuge. $12, 12watt hydro light is the way to go. Would love to see BRS do a side by side with this.

I run this and the spectrum is very close to the kessil.
UFO Led Grow Light, Growstar 150W Full Spectrum Plant Light with Cree COB and Switch for Indoor Plants Seeding, Growing and Flowering. (150w) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07312WKX2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Wy9CAbRRW1YR3
Grows cheato super fast!!!!
I think the question was, " is the kessils worth the big bucks". For me they are, because of the rise in ph and drop in nutrients compared to the other lights I was using. As far as price I only paid 299.99 for mine which is a fair price for me.
You get the ph rise and drop in nutrients from any light that has a metric crapload of red LEDs with some blue. Kessil has not found some magical led that performs better than the typical horticulture spectrum....
nobody said they bought it because its a magical horticulture spectrum, they bought it because it produces results and is a well built product. You get the ph rise and drop in nutrients from any light that has a metric crapload of red LEDs with some blue. I love brs but my god some people are brainwashed. They didn’t include a cheap red/blue horticulture led in the test....
Mine is 7".It's recommended 1 foot to 2 foot off the waters surface depended on your fuge size![]()
Another large factor in it is how deep your fuge is. Mine is pretty deep and I keep my light about 10 inches off the water surface, and my chaeto almost never floats to the top it sits on the bottom. But in all honesty, who wouldn't take a corvette though! lolMine is 7".
It's a hard question to answer. If you are trying hard to get the most growth out of your fuge because you need every ounce of nutrient reduction you can get then yes it's worth it. It will grow macro better. But if that's not you, then no.
It's like saying I need a corvette to drive to work when really you need something reliable that goes 75 and gets decent gas mileage.
It's been my experience that the Kessil H380 matched with chaeto was able to reduce both phosphates and nitrates. Using GFO with chaeto almost always kills out the chaeto unless your system is extremely nutrient rich. And still nobody mentions phosphate control.
Does one light reduce and control phosphate levels better than other?
Or are people still using GFO?
My experience is using a refugium is good for nitrates control... For phosphate is a different story.
What is your opinion?
I have both. the h80 is decent for a small refugium but it is basically not a value when you consider the light output vs cost. I bought it with a specific use and it worked fine but this is a case where I would explore other options that would probably yield better results for less money especially if your fuge is >5 gallons.Everyone here is talking about the H380. Does anyone have any experience with H80?
I think there are other factors that come into play. Phosphate will reduce with better algae growth, which a good light can contribute, but also how much macro you have, and the type of macro as well. Carbon dosing can play a factor as well. Personally I don't use gfo at all in any of my three systems. I don't do water changes either. In fact in one tank I add liquid phosphate daily to keep it detectable. But it's all about system design as a whole. The kessil isn't going to make or break a phosphate situation alone. And still nobody mentions phosphate control.
