i bought a regal angelfish on the weekend...eating fine in the shop....big fat healthy lil fella with no disease visible.....any ideas of foods that your angels smash or food that might get it starting to feed???thanks so much....i dont want him to die

I've heard that regals can be shy about grabbing free-floating foods from the water column, especially if there's competition from fast-feeding planktivores such as anthias, tangs or wrasses. Have you tried something that he can pick at in a more leisurely manner? Maybe some nori that can be left in for a few hours, or a gel-type food pressed into a smaller piece of liverock and left at the bottom for grazers to snack on naturally?

~Bruce, who would like to attempt a regal one day ... but won't attempt one without a solo quarantine session.

oyster and clam... they love that.. afterward switch it up with Mysis shrimp.. They have to survive the first 2 weeks or else they won't make it.

ok thankyou

If you put the oyster or clam where it hang out close to the area it will eat.. Any angel go crazy over oyster or clam... remember to remove uneaten food after 24hrs

I had good luck with clams and mussels on the half shell when I first got my Regal.

Live blackworms and red nori are my go to for all of my regals. My pair now ate it within a couple days. Some have taken a couple weeks to eat significantly.

Live brine can sometimes also do the trick.

They seem to get overwhelmed by lots of food in the water column, attempt several small feedings each day. Regals seem less likely to eat in certain types of the day when new. Most of those I've quarantined ate midday better than morning or evening, others preferred morning, others evening until they became comfortable then they eat whenever.

Also, feed and back away as the intimidation is a stressor for these fish and if they don't feel scared or intimidated by your presence they're much more likely to feed. They're also more interested when food is first added so if you're standing there and they don't eat it you may have missed your window.

So I feed and slowly retreat out of their sight and watch.

Have you tried an Angel Mixture? Sponge, algae are the two main food sources in the wild. They can be a challenge to get to eating, very shy and methodical eaters. I only see mine 1/2 of the day. Good luck.

I have tried two as well and apparently they are so shy they will starve before coming out to eat.. I just recently picked up a bag of clams on a half shell because I bought a Midas blenny and she was shy as well.. she didn't bother with it the first night but since.. she loves it. The half shell is for finicky eaters so maybe try that.. drop it in after thawing and leave.. peaking in on her. If that doesn't work try another one with garlic drops.. good luck with it:)

What was the Regal eating at the shop?
yes..brine flake pellets...however i have noticed red dots around the size of white stop appear only on its tail fin and blood seems to be coming out like little bite wounds i dont know.....but the vein is red coloured leading up to the tip of the fin ill try and get a pic any idea of hat the red spots are??

That sounds as though it could be bacterial in nature, but I don't know ... @melypr1985 or @Humblefish might though - they know more about fishy ailments than anyone else I can think of.
