I've used a QuietOne before for a similar set up, and it was a great choice for a return pump. The only reason I don't use it now is because I am sumpless.

I would go with eheim 1260 or 1262. You could also do Tunze 1073.040

I would feel comfortable recommending a mag 7. I have a mag 5 on my 20 frag. You lose a little head to bring the water from the sump up to the tank. In my case there are no bends or angles, but using their chart my mag 5 really moves only 300gph. I think that would not be enough for a 40g tank. I am sure there are other pumps that are just as good, my only experience is with mags. Have used a 5 and a 9.5. My 5 was in use for 5 yrs on a previous tank and has been in use on my current tank for about 1 yr. It is super easy to maintain, in my tank it is pretty quiet as well. I am very sensitive to noise so that is key. I have heard good things about tunze and ehiem as well, just never used them.

Good luck!

i would also go with the ehiem 1260 great pumps

I am being told i won't need one that strong, so i am looking for ones that are just below 600gph at most.

Whatever you go with, make sure to look at the manufacturer rating of what your pump would be once there is head added. Figure out how many times you want your tank to turn over from your return and use that adjusted rated number to figure out if the pump you are looking at will do the job. As I said earlier, 30" of head turns the mag 5 from 500gph to 300gph, which would definately not be enough for your tank.

300 gph is plenty for a 40 gal tank. you only really need 3x turnover and hour through sump (some do less). I prefer 5-10x. Mag 5 would put you in that range. I would highly recommend Mag 5 or Mag 7. Very reliable and 5 yr maufactuary warranty on pump. Mag 7 would also allow you to feed reactor and such down the road. Yes Eheim are the best pump, but Mags cant be beat for performance/value in IMHO.

I like to target 3-5x the display tank and that's after you figure how much flow you lose to head loss. Use powerheads to makeup for the lost flow

what

do you think about an Eheim compact 2000 ?

I'm the one vote for odyssea pumps. For a submerged pump they are a remarkable value. Quite well constructed, cheap replacement parts, low vibration and very quiet and they meet their specs. I've run 4 for several years now and never have had any issues.

The 700 specs are: (cost $36.00)
Max. Height: 10 ft
Flow Rate: 712 gph
Watts: 65
# of Prong Plug: 3
Inlet type: 3/4" Barb
Outlet type: 3/4" Barb
Dimensions: 7.00"x 3.50"x 3.75"
Duty Cycle: Continuous Operation

I have decided to go with the Eheim Compact series...Reading Mags make to much noise and the Compact is dead silent.

Now, should I go with the 2000 which is 528gph or the 3000 that is at 792 gph?
