In no way was any of this directed at coralline. The way I view coralline is:

if you like it, keep it, we dont require it scraped off in any rip clean.

if you want it gone, razor it or vinegar paper towel soak it/ whichever it takes. The last thing we care about in a rip clean is coralline agreed his looks great I can’t even grow one spot. Must be my leds too bright or something

So why is he doing it? *baffled now*

I was hoping I missed something and you weren't actually doing this to fight coraline. I gain no pleasure from you suffering any sort of setback. I hope it all works for you.

Remember it's just words on an screen and your skin will thicken up fine.

There's a lot more backstory to this tank than just "OH MAN IT'S PURPLE", I've had my struggles with it. Mainly a series of problems/happenings caused by dinos.


3 months in - tank stabilized mostly

5 months in - light dinos - did 3 day blackout, dr tims, etc.

6 months in - start seeing dino activity (bubbles) - ran UV seemed to go away

7 months in - went on vacation and left someone in charge, came back to a tank PLAGUED by dinos. EXPLOSION. Ran a very regimented dino x round out of frustration and desire to nuke dinos.

7+ months in - dinos were gone, corraline exploded, could not maintain tank due to rockwork - overcrowding

Lately - slight dino scare + overall condition of sand bed (beginning to brown, thought was amp.) made me feel something had to be done, drastic. Here we are. That's probably oversimplified.

we like to run lights about 20% less intensity a few days in the clean system it helps to lessen photo shock

I’m so happy you really did well, really that’s clear. Others can copy the work safely to effect upgrades and tank moves and cyano battles if wanted, I like how the rocks are simply cleaned but retained the aging pigments where it looks very balanced


agreed the coralline was a gem try and grow that back over time I bet it will be easy for that system


also for readers how did you remove the coralline without scratching

TEST RESULTS -

Alk - 11.9 (lol)
Phos - .17
Nitrate - 3
Nitrite - 0
Ammonia - .2 (I use a red sea test for this....it ALWAYS reads .2)
PH - 8.2

Nitrates are lower than normal (expected), phosphates are a lil' high for me (I'm not sure I care about phosphates honestly and this is within range of the tank prior to tear down)....

LIVESTOCK - corals fine, zoas opening up no issues, GSP is (obviously) fine, Euphyllia are coming out, my torch is almost extended fully, nems look great.

Overall looks good so far, will report back in tomorrow.

Saw a brown stringy thing this morning and my heart sank….had to be dinos. Under the microscope to confirm. Yes, it’s a turd.

Well they’re the scourge of reefing, so just insert a siphon hose and take it out, it’s not a fail if when dealing with the top invasion in reefing you have to do repeat guidance. the point of a rip clean is the offending mass is not wrecking your tank, and removal takes one minute vs the catchup for an hours long rip clean when the mass was allowed to run the tank.


you’d be hand removing the mass by siphon, permitting no takeover, as you align preventatives such as a turbo twist uv which is your best growback preventer

a similarity in your tank and the 400+ page dinos control thread is that a one shot fix may not occur, and to manage the top invasion possible in reefing you’ll have to do continual guidance work, same as a common garden that isn’t weed free it has to be guided that way.
They are at page 400 with no cures defined because it’s the top scourge.



a difference between your tank and the 400+ page dinos control thread is you won’t be getting trade off invasions into next year, your tank looks great. Common gha and cyano aren’t poised for takeover, allocating the system away from ugly dinos into as-ugly rocks totally covered in gha…you have a great looking reef, the price for importing dinos/ no quarantine dry rock builds/ is that you’ll have to work a few mins each week to prevent loss from the #1 worst invasion in reefing. You’re lucky its a nano for sure, those are easy to guide. Dinos were allowed to seat in place months and months, we barely got around to fixing them three days ago after purposefully farming them half a year



take all the various things folks advise to battle dinos and run them now in the clean, uninvaded condition. You’re dealing with one strand to remove vs 1,332 strands covering the whole system.


the point of a rip clean is your system is now cloudless, when you do water changes and hand guiding you won’t be mixing up a complete cloud of waste all around the tank, you created a condition that allows you to simply lift out a rock and clean it off externally and set it back, or siphon off the top of the sandbed in a given spot that uses one gallon of siphon water effort to remove the mass


It’s clear now that for nano owners being invaded is a choice, not biology, as well as having a totally clean reef is a choice, not biology, so simply will the compliant condition until system maturity and some luck lends it for you.

How your reef looks in 2022 is now 100% under your control, there is no luck involved it’s pure will to be invaded or pure will to maintain clean running.

whatever you do, don’t sit back and let the top invasion in reefing win, it’s not as strong now as it was in the full allowance takeover mode, keep driving it down with simple direct removal.

get a turbo twist it’ll help lots I bet, and if you get it off amazon and it doesn’t help lots of times those can be sent back for a refund per store rules

I went out of town for a few days to visit my parents in Chicago. I had a few setbacks and a medical emergency that kept me away a few days longer than I planned. notice how his required work has shifted? It’s not dinos, it’s now gha taking over every surface since parameter boosting was used to suppress dinos, the plants were given a rise. Nobody is escaping dinos work-free in the pattern studies

you can easily begin altering some of your params to suppress dinos and when algae starts to take over your rocks be creative: simply lift them out, use a knife tip to debride off the algae in precision detail, dab some peroxide on the former anchor spot, and set back an algae free rock in a dinos free nano.

the point of making use of a nano’s easy access vs those large sixty gallon setups is you have physical access options they don’t have, make use of them. Prior if you lifted out a rock for cleaning and set it back in the unclean nano, a huge cloud is generated and now your system is so clean it won’t.


can’t wait to see the bright nice pics when lights come on today. Be target feeding your coral better than ever to add mass and make up for the months of wait, they’re hungry and the clean system is ready to take on mass. Since this is a sandbed system vs bare bottom, expect to have to clean that sand again someday.

some updates, phosphates creeped up a bit (I assume from feedings) but not really a concern at this time. Nitrates are low but coming up. Here’s some photos (sorry for the colors). You can see the blastos are in rough shape but the improvement in the last 3 days is leaps and bounds. It also went through an H202 dip prior. I have two zoa plugs in rough shape too, they also went through an H202 dip prior. They are starting to show signs of recovery. Will try and keep everyone updated on this thread as it goes along. Shout out to my #1, Mr. geometric Pygmy hawk. Easily my fav fish I’ve ever kept.

Wonderful pics I’m proud to have this post as the first link in the best of the best thread I hijacked. You did real tank surgery+ dentistry. Add brand new light acclimation hurdle cleared the same day rip clean was finished…a double challenge make sure those lights dont sunburn~ be under your endpoint desired max PAR levels not at them already. For sure the feeding you’re doing well plus the crisp new spectrum will bring corals back fast.

a third and hidden benefit of the r clean is no chemical souping at all, thats crazy clean water. Instead of half-dying targets rotting in the tank, it’s protein slicks and vitamin trails in the water due to great feeding. Corals will be even more extended by Wednesday for sure, a new bell curve has been forced on the tank its on the upside now.


agreed params will rebound in unique ways tank to tank, it’s why the intercepting water changes help to guide things towards new saltwater levels as dosing if any is fine tuned.


this all really is like reef tank exercise there’s a benefit to the six month sustained look back vs week one

it gets flushed and worked with feed and cpr water changes vs stagnancy. Coral nutrition and photosynthesis improved with the lights and feed base, the reef takes on a fringing reef high energy high calcified mass mode vs the eutrophic plant dominant mode which is reef atrophy and beckons disease.
