my 75 gal tank has been up and running for a little over a month and my salinity has been 1.025 up until last Saturday it went up to 1.026 I test with a digital hanna sal tester I have calibrated it and cleaned and I only use ro water to top off I don't have a auto top off so I add water in the morning and evening when it is below my line now it has been at 1.026 until this morning it is now at 1.027 I've been racking my brain on why it is going up and I can't think of anything so does anyone have any ideas? O I did add 2 clown fish on Monday

I get an ATO and buy a good refractometer with .35 solution to crosscheck the hanna.
Never zero out a refractrometer with RO/DI for the calibration.

If your doing water changes, make sure the SG matches your display water.

I'm looking into a ato I haven't did a water change yet

so that is what I used

Salt doesn't evaporate, water does. As your water level goes down, your salinity goes up. As you add water, salinity goes down. It is about the concentration of salt in the water... the ratio of salt to water.

In this hobby, stability is our friend. I think ATO is something to consider so you eliminate swings in salinity.

Do you think your hanna is right?
I do I have cal with the 35.cal solution and I got water ready to do a water change and it reads 1.025 but you are right I do need to get a good refractometer so I have 2 ways to check

I get all of that I'm deff going to get a ato when the funds are available but for now I have a mark that I keep the water level at and i've been really good at keeping it on the mark for 30 days I've had no change in sal until this week

PM me your shipping address. I have a extra ato laying around I will send to you. I know how the money gets tight for this hobby in the first few months.

Are you testing the salinity at different times? My only thought would be that the very last time you checked it and it was 1.027 could be that the top off water you added didn't have enough time to fully mix with the saltwater - thus giving you a higher salinity.

If you have a fixed amount of salt in the same volume of water your salinity cant change. If what you are testing it with says it is changing something is wrong.
If you mix new water with something that is inaccurate then you are going down a hole into who knows where.

I do test at different times all evening

Before doing anything corroborate it another way. If possible with something you already know it’s calibrated

I'm going to the fish store tomorrow and a new refractometer is on the top of my list so I'll have 2 ways to check it.thank u

I have the 35. Solution from hanna that I cal it with so if there is something better to use to cal it with please let me know
