I don't think I ever posted a pic of this lobo. I won this at MACNA.

For some reason I can't keep Monitpora in my tank. They do great for a while, decline, I break off all the dead pieces and it starts all over again. Acros, birdsnests, Stylo, LPS, zoas all are fine and growing well with good color. I lost my orange cap again and part of my orange Digi, a small green cap and my purple looks bad. The sunset montipora looks great all the rest are nearly dead. I've been doing this for a long time now and have never been able to figure it out. The montis made a miraculous recovery after killing the blue cloves so I thought they were my problem but it's happening again. The branches of the digi died but the base is still encrusting with good color.

Before, grew from a frag, died, grew to this recently,

Yesterday, I fragged it to attempt to save some of it. This is how they all do. Starts fading and slowly dies.

That's kind of weird. It doesn't look like damage from monti eating nudis, so I'm not really sure seeing as all other SPS seems to be doing fine.

Are you dosing kalk? Perhaps it's not mixing completely and some sediment is accumulating on the large horizontal growth of your caps?

No kalk. I dose 2 part with BRS dosing pump for alk and I add a small amount of calcium to my ATO. Parameters are very stable. I test 2-3 times a week for calcium and alk. Once a month for magnesium but I never need to add magnesium.

Like you said it doesn't show damage from pests. Just turns pale and dies. Once I break off all the dead parts they tend to start growing back.

I'll be "that guy" that points to stray voltage when they can't think of any other logical explanation. :snicker: Have you tested for it?

No I haven't. Wouldn't that take out my other corals too? My acros are growing better than they ever have.

Just out of curiosity, can you break a chunk off and place it elsewhere in your tank? I wonder if those Paly's are winning a coral war?

I broke off several small pieces that still have color and glued them here and there. This isn't the only piece being affected though. The orange digi isn't near anything and it looks the same as the cap. It's all the Montis except the setosa and the sunset.

Zoas, palys and a small green polyp toadstool. Yes I run carbon, BRS lignite.

I had the same problem with my monti caps when I was in Texas. They would grow out and then, mysteriously, die off. They would get a brown looking slime on them and start receding. Then they would start growing back. I did a bunch of research and swapped pictures and ideas with some people in Dallas for a couple years and never really found the root cause. The two most logical ideas were stray voltage and toxic warfare between softies. That's back when I had the large leathers so there was a good chance that toxic warfare was the culprit. Like you, the only thing affected was the monti caps. All my other SPS pieces did great. Good luck! Keep us posted if you figure it out.

Can you remove the Leather?

I could but honesty I'd rather have the leather than the Montis. It's a green polyp toadstool I really like. If that's my problem then I just won't be able to keep Montipora I guess. I have a sunset Monti that looks great and is one of my best growers. Most of the frags I made died but there are a few small ones that appear ok. Hopefully some start to regrow.

I added some mangroves to the fuge today just for kicks. I've never had any so I just wanted to see how they do.

Looks great, love the dark shots, SPS and zoas look fantastic. If I'm ever over my Marshall I'd love to see it in person

I've done the Mangroves before and they are cool, my buddy had one that was growing in a pot next to his tank that was 4' tall.

For the best results with them keep the leaves free of salt creep and mist them occasionally with freshwater.
