Ritteri cipro treatment

Holy cow, that thing is massive! It's amazing that you didn't need Cipro. I'm wanting more and more to try one of these out, maybe I'll get the chance some day. I've even got a perfect spot! When I clear out some sand space, I want to dedicate a lot of real-estate to a couple different nems.

I don’t know if I would recommend not doing a cipro treatment but since I got the nem within 24 hours and it came in clean water and showed no infection signs during the quarantine period I figured I would try to do it without. I also wanted to document it throughly incase it turns out to be a mistake, but hopefully it’ll be a success.

Quick question... How did you get the Mag freed up to get it in the tank?

Slowly! Luckily it was on the wall of the tank so all I had to do was gently pry a small part of foot up and off the wall and begin to slowly lift it up with my finger. If you do it slowly the nem will help out by releasing the foot in other areas but it’s important to go slow so you don’t damage the foot and risk infection.

Did you turn off your pumps in the DT to let the Mag settle in?

@JonezNReef yes! It took about 40 min for the foot to latch on comfortably before I turned on the pumps again, and at the I had them on the lowest setting.

Both Magnifica/Ritteri are doing well. No gaping mouth or inflation cycles for either since the introduction of the new one. The new one seems to prefer the T5 dominated side while the older one is happy directly under the kessil. I did have to trade in several coral to accommodate shelf rock and the relocated sinularia and long polyp leather, but really happy with everything so far.

Today I noticed what I’ve always considered to be expelled zooxanthellae waste on the new ritteri.

It collected in just the right spot where to flow didn’t pick it up so I was able to see it. My assumption is that the nem is adjusting the zooxanthellae population according to the new lighting conditions (higher PAR) or regular feeding. Either way, I thought I would post and if anyone has another theory please chime it!

Looks really good. I’m no expert but my larger non bleached Mag has been expelling the same looking stuff here and there and I wrote it off to adjusting to my lights as well. Plus I know it’s been snatching up Mysis when I fed them here and there so could be some food waste too
Either way I’m sure you have your eye on it and would catch if it was turning south.

Probably regular excrement, doesn’t seem like anything to be worried about, my anemones do this regularly.

Today I came home and found the new mag completely deflated but with no gaping mouth. Not a good sign IMO so I will observe it over the next 24-48 hrs and continue to post updates. I’ll get a hospital tank and cipro ready to use as well.

Any changes that could be messing with it? Have you fed it more than usual or anything? At least the Mags in good hands if it does go south any.

Thanks! As far as changes, nothing that I could think of. I had changed the light schedule and my doser was off a bit but nothing else reacted…

So no deflation events have occurred since Monday so as of now I’m assuming it was due to me fixing my doser that wasn’t working. It attached to its shelf rock really well and I’m hesitant to remove it to treat it at this point.

I did pick up a prescription for cipro from my vet just in case, but got several questions and strange looks at Walgreens this time since my “first name” changed on the prescription!

Update: The mag is very bleached but still has not had any deflation/inflation cycles. I lowered the shelf rock to see if lowering the PAR would help and the tentacles did seem to look better. I’ve done two zooxanthellae transplants similar to my other mag that was also bleached. Feeding response is very good and I’ve seen no expelled food yet and feed 3x per week small pieces of raw shrimp. My guess is that something regarding my parameters (PAR, temp, salinity, etc.) was off from the mags original parameters from where it was collected and the zooxanthellae bailed. I still don’t think it’s a pathogen issue in the mag since there has been to typically signs of an infections so I’m hesitant to treat it in its current state. Although, in hindsight I should have treated it when I received it to at least eliminate the possibility of an infection in the event something like this occurred. I’ll keep everyone posted on any updates…

Hate to see that it’s bleaching but it still looks full and has a hint of color left... it should bounce back with time. Your bleached ones coming along too.

The bleached mag is staring to develop the same faint zooxanthellae streaks that the first mag developed after a zooxanthellae transplant as described by OrionN. The streaks are still too faint to take pics of but glad to see them developing and will post as soon as they get more pronounced. Hopefully I’ll see the same process as the first mag below!
