RKE Head Unit Firmware

It depends on which module you have. The SL1 cannot but the SLX can.

You can get the SLX to replace it or the SL2v2 to add to the system. Depends on whether you plan on getting a salinity probe or not.

Probably not. I've heard there are reliability issues with the salinity probes. Is that a dis statement?

The issue was with the original SL2 and the salinity probe. That is why there is a SL2v2. It uses a different probe than the SL2. I would not use one to control but it make a good backup. I have 2 alarms setup for low salinity reading and high salinity reading. If for some reason it goes out of bounds either way it cuts off my auto water change. If it goes low then it shuts off the ATO. Mine has been very stable. Just remember it is a conductivity probe that calculates the salinity from the conductivity reading and temp.

I had a very successful weekend and was able to set up and get operable my RKE system. I just need to calibrate the temp probes and I have the basics set up. I had no issues setting up the NET Module, probably because I hard wired it to my router. However this morning I tried to log in to NetReef from my work computer and phone and received a message that the connection timed out. Any idea as to what I should do to resolve this?

Do you have it setup for outside access? You have to setup port forwarding and assign a static IP for the net module. You will also need a static IP for the Internet from your service provider or use as dns service that is compatible with your router such as dyn.com. Make sure which ever one you choose that it is compatible with the router. Your router will have send the service your actual IP address and keep it updated when it changes.

Ok I didn't do that. I was hoping to avoid the dreaded port forwarding work. I saw there was a topic on DA's website that addresses this issue. I'll study that before I dive into it.

The latest is 3.02, but as mentioned you'll need a V2 upgrade to see your head unit. Also note that the NET module has to be upgraded when ONLY it's plugged into the V2 and your computer. Make sure your using the latest MyReef 2.0.82. Found these things out the hard wayo_O

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check out the firmware version on my NET module but as you say I can't use the 3.xx firmware on my head unit.

I don't think you will need the latest NET firmware as you are not using any of the new modules on your system since you cannot update the head unit firmware. If you do eventually need one of the new modules I would suggest getting the Archon head unit instead of the RKEv2. Then there is no need for the NET module. The Archon head unit almost the same as having an SLX, APC and ALC module with added bonus of two extra switch ports and two PWM ports also with the ports that are built into the Archon head unit itself.

That would be my next move. Archon would make sense for me not the RKEv2.

I was able to setup email notification last night but had problems with port forwarding. I believe my problem was how I entered the port info into the router and will try to correct this tonight. I have a question. The Net is on port 80. I'm on Comcast and I understand this could be blocked. If this is the case do I change the port on the Net to say 8080 and then load that port to the router? Thanks.

Most of the newer routers will reroute the port. You can use a different outside port and it will forward to port 80 internally. If you change the port on the NET then you will have to put that port in to access locally as well as outside.

I think I had the wrong port numbers in the router. I used 80 and 8080 thinking there were separate ports for external and internal. Basically I didn't fully understand port forwarding. I still don't fully understand it but with some help from YouTube and the DA forum Port Forwarding and DDNS for Dummies I'm hopeful I can get it to work tonight.

Great info on here thanks for sharing as well. I have a newer RKE kit w/ net and will be finishing my build this week. Im sure I will find myself on this thread soon with questions. Thanks again.

Well I struck out this evening with port forwarding. I set up an account with no-ip but Linksys routers don't appear to support the .net extension in the DDNS setup. Not sure if this is critical to port forwarding but it would appear that you need to pay no-ip to get the DDNS.com extension. Looks like I will need to pay a visit to our company IT guy. Also not certain if the firewall isn't blocking the port although I don't think so.

To check your port forwarding when you are at home goto whatsmyip and it will tell you your current IP. Type in that IP followed by the port you assigned example( 20.24.1.205:8080 ). I just typed in some numbers. That is a made up IP as an example.

I'll give that a shot. I was checking it through another site but kept getting a message that the connection timed out.
