Hi Guys,

I am new to RO DI unit and wanted to install it under my sink. Plz, see the pick below. All the videos I have seen have a plastic white tube coming from the sink and people usually drill it and add saddle to connect tubing. In my case, I have this metal pipe. Not sure if it's a good idea to drill it or should I drill the P trap on the top?

The hole for the tube needs to be sealed unless it drains into the sink. It does not matter what you drill as long as you can make a water tight seal.

oh, in that case, I will drill it on the P trap. I have drill bit and I am comfortable with drilling on PVC not on metal.
Can u suggest where should I drill like on the vertical side or the p (bottom side). I was reading and it talked about toxic smell and all so got nervous.

needs to be above the p trap as well. other than that, you should be fine.
The black shaped is the P trap so if it has to be above then I have to drill the metal is that correct ?

Wait. Stop.

The p-trap is there to hold a puddle of water that prevents sewer gas from coming into the living space.

The water level in the trap will be level with the bottom of the waste (white) pipe.

The metal piece is called a tailpiece, and indeed, it’s often plastic. The end of the tailpiece overlaps into the black p-trap such that you can’t drill above the water line.

I don’t care what you use to connect the RODI drain to the p-trap; it won’t be water tight long term.

Your best bet would be to replace your sink tailpiece with a $10 plastic one and drill into that below the stopper arm. It would still be susceptible to minor leaks, but there is no standing water there so it should be ok.

My ipinion;
Get yourself another black piece like the one that goes from the P trap to the white drain. Drill a hole in the top flat part. Be sure to drill so the white pipe does not block it. Get a john Guest fitting and cement it into the hole. This way you can take it out if you ever need to and no need for the saddle clamp. Put a loop in the waste water exit tube from the RO so you have a P trap of sorts This will prevent any gas from comming back into the ro unit.

water tight saddle. i’ve installed many of these, including right above the p trap. no issues.

Yes, you could use the saddle in the area Cromag illustrated assuming there is space for the fitting. Just know that it is below the water line of the trap so it could back drain into the rodi under certain situations.

When drilling you’ll get wet if you drill in place.

It’s also not code legal to drill in that location... but presumably we aren’t worrying about that.

I already have this https://www.homedepot.com/p/ISPRING-Drain-Clamp-Drain-Saddle-with-Quick-Fitting-ADS1K/306572697

i’m thinking the odds of waste making its way back into the rodi unit itself would be very slim? especially if the rodi line was mounted above the saddle.

Plumbing doesn’t really work on odds though. You’re correct it likely wouldn’t ever cause an issue if routed consciously.

We are trying to come up with creative solutions where one isn’t needed.

Clamp on tailpiece. Done. Drill the metal or swap out for plastic if you are more comfortable with it.

i’m guessing that’s a small piece of foam to prevent leaks. if you drill metal you’ll just need to tap it first. like @Beau_B said, drinking metal itself isn’t hard.
kool I will try to drill metal pipe. I guess I need special drill bit for it. Will stop by Home depo. I didn't get what you mean by "Tap is first" did you mean to tape it first or something else.
