I had to replace mine for a PVC piece because I wasn’t comfortable drilling through metal. Cost about $8 at Lowe’s.

So when you removed the metal sink drain did you have to remove anything from the top of the sink. The one which stops bigger pieces going into drain.

No, and sorry in advance if I don’t use the right plumbing terms.

I brought the metal ring that had screwed onto the bottom of the drain and the pipe itself to Lowe’s. They matched the metal with a PVC replacement that came with an o-ring, which was a little different than the one on the metal ring, and also gave me a piece of PVC that match the same diameter of the metal down pipe.

The metal part of the drain that goes up into the sink that stops bigger debris stayed.

Hope this helps.

Let me jump in again for a minute.

Checkered is working with a kitchen sink; the strainer is separate from the tailpiece.

The OP is in a bathroom where the tailpiece is one unit with the stopper mechanism, so yes, the bits on the sink basin side (wet) are changed out along with the metal tailpiece.

EDIT: OP would be looking at something like this as a replacement, if they wanted to go that route.

Thank you guys I was able to install RO/DI unit by drilling the top section of the P trap and putting air tight saddle. I tried to drill the metal but it was slippery and the saddle i got was too big so I gamble with second approach. I will attach the pic once I clean up the area.

Here is the pic of final attachment
