Ro/di

Its here! And this thing is awesome!!

First TDS meter reads, In 150-160, Out 007-008.
Second TDS meter reads, In 000, Out 000!!
And my waste water ratio is between 3:1-4:1. Water pressure about 60.

The RO only TDS will go down more once the membranes get seasoned or broken in. They are an awesome unit.

One thing I suggest but too late now is flushing each filter individually before adding the next then running 3-5 gallons of RO to waste before adding the DI cartridges one at a time too. It extends their life by rinsing out any glues, binders and antimicrobial treatments.

Does that unit run 2 DI cartridges?

I think so, its the MaxCap 180Gpd unit.
How many gallons do I dump before using?

I'm researching rodi units now and from what I have read you should run it about 30 minutes to flush everything out. Sorry to hijack your thread with my questions.

No worries, I am trying to learn here as well. Ask away, it actual help me from asking so many questions myself. Lol!

The proper way to set up a new unit is to remove all cartridges except the sediment filter. Disconnect the 1/4" line from the carbon block leading up to the RO membrane at the membrane end and flush several minutes out this line. Next install the carbon block and repeat the process. Next, reconnect the line to the membrane and run 3 to 5 gallons of RO only to the drain or until you see the TDS drop to its lowest point and stay steady. Next install the first or MaxCap DI cartridge and run about 1 or 2 bed volumes through the DI, maybe 1/2 gallon. Add the last or SilicaBuster cartridge and run until you see 0 TDS, again maybe 1/2 gallon and you are ready to go.

When filter cartridges are made they contain glues, binders and antimicrobial agents that need to be flushed out. If you don't flush these away it shortens the flife of whatever is downstream and traps it. This is especially true of dry untested systems. Spectrapure tests their membranes so much of this flushing is done prior to you receiving the MaxCap system but its still good practice with any new system or at filter/cartridge replacements.

AZ, you should set up a filtration thread for Q&A.. You are very helpful in this subject and I think a lot of others would agree... maybe do a nice write-up as the first post that covers the basics..

+1 that would be awesome

I do moderate the water quality forums on a couple reef websites. I have several sticky posts floating around but you are right, I need to assemble it all in one spot.
