RO is just Reverse Osmosis. Water is typically passed through (by pressure thus the reverse part) a membrane of a particular micron (normally one micron) The water and any thing smaller then one micron will pass through and everything bigger then one micron is rejected as waste water. Some contaminates are one micron or smaller along with inappropriate pressure can allow contaminates through the membrane. Water coming out of my RO unit commonly has a TDS of one and up to as high as three. A DI resin will attract different contaminates according to there natural charge, positive or negative. By running RO water through either a mixed resin DI bed (anion/cation mixed together) or a three stage resin bed (anion, cation then a mixed of anion and cation) you capture the remaining contaminates giving you 0 TDS water. So what is the difference between a RO and an RO/di system? And what is the benefit of them over your house water for your fish tank?
