Rock Flower Anemone - Dip in Bayer - Is it Safe?

I took a Razor Blade and Cut it in Half through the Mouth.

Then I Dipped it in Lugol's Iodine Dip for 15 Minutes.

They looked like the Picture the Very Next Day.

So now it has been 5 Days and they look Great.

Awesome, keep us posted! If this works out, it would be huge! The nice thing about splitting is you get the original DNA, no cross breeding. Plus... I am tired of waiting for babies :)

FYI --- 5-10 days after cutting an anemone in half doesn't mean success. If it is still alive in 9-12 months, then you can say that.

Phil had tried this with an S. mertensii and it took just about a year before one of the halves died (( if memory serves, the other half died a lot sooner )).

I know this is old, I found this thread wanting to know the same thing as the OP as I want to add a maxi mini to my SPS tank and I'm afraid of getting AEFW and red bugs. Yes anemone's can't host AEFW or Red Bugs, but one thing a lot of you have not considered is the possibility of the water the anemone is in can carry those pest. Also, why is okay to dip ricordia and shrooms when anemone's have basically the same taxonomy? With that being said, once I get a maxi mini, I will dip it in bayer and report back here.

Waiting on report! =)

Well you Dip Corals in Insecticide so why not an Anemone?

Yes, maybe it is going to kill the Nem but maybe it will not.

That is why I asked the question.

I really do not know but really need to know.

People are entitled to their opinions and I do appreciate them but I really need to hear from somebody that actually tried it.

If somebody actually tried it and had no problems then I will do it.

And if they did have issues I will not do it.

I do not want to kill it so I am basing it off other peoples past experiences so I do not make any mistakes (saying others made the mistake that is because maybe it works. I don't know).
I have always read that you do NOT dip inverts...it will kill them. A nem is an invert, not a coral, you would not ever dip a BTA, shrimp, or clam so I would say: No, do not dip any type of nem. I have several and they have not been dipped and are doing great, with no negative effects to the dt. If you are worried about something, qt them just like you would a fish.

Seems to be just like lugols. It works when corals get infections mostly. It kinda works the same way as stress coat on fish, or even like iodine works on the human body by disinfection abs promoting healing. I'm not really sure if it would kill many hitchhikers.

Disclaimer...have not read entire thread....
If it is the same Lugols iodine I have (I take it for thyroid) it is actually pretty strong stuff. It can be used to remove skin cancer (moles, or any other skin growth) by just painting the skin with it daily. Depending on the concentration, it may be able to kill pest also.

I have read the entire thread. I've stumbled across this because I have indeed found threads stating that Rock Flower Anemones need a male and a female in order to populate. After questioning different vendors in my area, I've found several who have reported success with manual (razor blade down the mouth) propagation of Flower Rock Anemones. This is after researching and seeing SO MUCH evidence stating it wasn't possible.

Quite frankly, the amount of folks who shamed the OP is absurd. Granted, they should have gone ahead and just tried it out and then documented it, but who knows, maybe they were onto something. The day I presume to know everything is the day I no longer want to keep going. Personally, I would never dip a nem because I was worried about flatworm, but I'm not going to tell you that it can't be done. Especially if I've not tried it myself.

I for one, am glad there is some what of a written conversation here, it's helped me tremendously, 6 years later. I hope people are still asking questions, not bringing their assumptions to the table.
