Hi everyone
I was reading last night about mussels . I’ve never eaten one but a lot of people do so they can not be too bad to eat . They say there from the bivalve family. What I didn’t know was they filter 20 litres of water a day not bad for a small thing . Then this got me thinking smoke coming out of my ears having to think but we have loads of oysters in our area the sea gulls pick them up fly to the road and drop them at a grate height so they smash and you’ve got breakfast. Any way I was wondering why all the sea gulls had nest and baby’s something to do with the oysters maybe. So I looked on my faithful y tube channel and sure there are people keeping oyster aquariums in the uk and other place but what I read about mussels and oysters in the tank don’t survive a grate length of time due to starving with the lack of plankton but if you culture plankton at home you would think the oysters and mussels would do fine . Anyway just my thought on a Sunday morning

This another if your into your oysters.

that was filmed not to far from where i live and i have over 40 years of diving in such water. it looks just like my diving and much of my diving was in "oyster bay". the large bay is still home to oyster farms but you see very few wild oysters although they are coming back with the cleaner water.

mussels and barnacles like these are not really sub marine animals like oysters which can stay submerged.
they are intertidal animals and spend part of the time above the water at low tide. you don't find to many of them below the low tide mark.

clams stay underwater or just over the low tide mark in the mud where it is very wet.

you really can't keep northern shellfish in a tank very long because where they live there is so much fine mud and sediment that you can never feed them enough.

the water here where those creatures live has a visibility of usually 18". or half a meter for you brits

..hard to make capitals yet..

that avitar crab i use is a local hermit crab. i took that picture from a few inches away which is the only way you would see it

This is why you are a member of this group your knowledge is outstanding. Great info as always

i make most of it up especially while i am in pain :grimacing-face:
Keep making it up it’s good reading . I watched a show the other night about the oxy pain killer in USA . And how much the company made off destroying people lives as well as doctors handing them out . I didn’t know anything about this drug until I watched the show . So keep off the oxy and you will be ok .

In the mid 90's I was working on photo shoot at Warhols place after it was over while I was waiting on the film to be developed, I bought a pole and did some shore fishing...
Hope your feeling better!

This is what I need to know about been thinking of starting plankton. How do you do it and is it easy
Obviously the light source is easy for me.. (window sill with frost film on the window)
I have a friend that raises mussel and oyster spat and I get my phyto from him. But he is not aways available on weekends so I have to keep the cultures active. I am sure somewhere near you you can pick up some cultures. I also use F4 as a fertilizer/nutrient at a rate of 1ml per ltr.
It is super easy. I may lose a culture once in a while on a hot/cold day and the shift is too much.
I culture Tet, Iso and cheato. the cheato need silica (it is good for bivalves) our tap water is high in silica so I use that for the cultures. but you can use the stuff for sponges if yours is not.
