I have been posting alot sorry about that. But I was just making some new rodi water and I went to check the filter and I noticed the deinonizeing filter was completely brown. I was surprised because I only filtered around 70 gallons of water. What is going on?

What are your TDS numbers on the output side?

As long as your TDS = zero, I wouldn't worry about the color.

I am not sure I need to purchase a tds monitor. I was just surprised to see the filter that color.

They sell some pretty cheap reliable ones on amazon. Think i got mine for under $20. It’s a handheld one but still gets the job done. Good to test water going and and water coming out

I just ordered one for 13 lol.

Several things could be happening.
  • Your RO membrane could be shot.
  • You could have a leak in the seal in the RO filter so non-RO water is going to the DI canister.
  • You could have poor pressure making the RO membrane work inefficiently.
  • Whenever you start up an RO system it takes a few minutes for the filter to start working at peak efficiency. Until that time, the water coming out of the RO filter has high TDS. (TDS Creep) If you are making small batches of water and starting and stopping the filter frequently, this can chew through the DI resin really quickly. A diverted that lets you waste the RO water for the first few minutes can reduce/prevent this.
  • You could have high CO2 in the water.
  • That filter looks pretty small, if you have really bad water, it could just depleat really quickly.
What’s the pressure of your system? What’s the TDS of your tap water and the TDS of the water coming out of the RO filter?

My resin changed color within the first 100 gallons or so. But my TDS is still zero, so, I'm not fretting it. If yours are zero, I wouldn't worry.

Alright cool thanks I will test the TDS when I get the meter. I was just shocked when I saw the color lol and the filter said replace when color changes.

I am not sure about the pressure. But I just ordered a tds monitor so I should know that soon. I am on a deep well 400 feet but there might be something in the water causing it to change color.

If the color has changed but the TDS is still at 0 you’re Ok, but I would keeep a close eye on it. Odds are the TDS will start rising soon.

@Aidanwolf - the two main things that will cause DI resin to turn quickly are high CO2 in your source water (possible for you,) or high TDS coming out of the RO membrane. There are several causes of the latter but it’s hard to diagnose without more information.

I just got a tds monitor and it says my well water has 47 ppm.

Hi, i not looking of the color only of the tds. I uploadet a Video some minutes ago how i change my resin, maybe it's interesting for you. is in german with english subtitel

I only see the option for German subtitles, but I will give you a view anyways.

Never mind I am an idiot lol. I didn't even see them at first.

I got 2 of those crappy inline DI filter tubes, i only make about 5-6 gallons each time with 1-2 tds after membrane, and i can see the boundary line between spent resin and still good resin slowly creep towards the output side...

Those inline things hold very little resin, about 1/3 - 1/4 of the 10" filter ones. Im not surprised you used up the whole thing after 70 gallons.

*edit* mine are slightly different, maybe a bit smaller than yours.

I will probably just order some replacement resin. I am on a budget and I like how compact it is. The good ones are twice the size probably for a reason though lol.
