RODI/Tap

What’s the long term effects of not using RODI water?
really depends on where you live. anyone that says ive only used tap and it works for me perfect so it should work perfectly for you is being wildly irresponsible. with RODI you know youre starting with nothing and any additions are because of you and only you.

tap water can be done i did it for years but it really comes down to quality of your tap water. RODI will make your life easier and even a cheapo RODI or even RO is better than nothing

IMO!

Tap water will have all sorts of unknowns. Most likely copper(toxic for inverts) some form of chlorine(toxic for bacteria) silicate that promote algae as well as ammonia and who knows what else.

I agree with DCal. I used to have a rodi setup in 2011. Then... Let's just say... I lost everything. Today, I have a little 12 gal. I'm using tap right now. I tested the water out of the tap and it's not too bad. Copper is present, but very low. Phosphate is at 1ppm. Everything else is good. Long-term... Water changes are the aquarist solution to remedy issues and keep your tank healthy. If you are using tap.. (in my situation) I'm putting in more phosphate and copper every time I top off and do water changes. This could lead to problems. I will be getting another rodi with some paychecks. That way, I'm not dumping in copper and phosphate.

So do y’all feel an RODI is essential?

First, what do you intend to home? Fish only? Or, a reef? Most fish are quite resilient to substances in tap water that are simply toxic to inverts.

What do YOU feel is acceptable? Slow deterioration of water quality that ultimately leads to increasingly toxic levels for livestock to survive? Keep in mind.. as water evaporates, the ONLY part lost is the water. ALL of the toxins remain! So, in essence, day by day, you replenish your water from the tap, you increase the level of toxins in your tank. That WILL catch up to you and eventually exterminate your livestock on a wholesale level.

More than likely, your tap has some low amounts of not so good stuff in it. Over time, your pollutants will build up in your tank. If you want to keep corals, it would be worth the investment in a rodi. You could also use distilled water. But, rodi would be the best choice. And, don't go buy a crazy setup either. Amazon has a 4 stage for like $50. Depending on your water pressure at home, you may also have to buy a booster pump. I think you need like 45psi. Most homes don't have that kinda water pressure. You can purchase a booster for $50.

I started with one of these cheap ones and quickly upgraded. I'd say anything 40g and up get a better one. I went with the BRS 5 stage and love it. Easier to see when filters should be replaced, flush valve and built in TDS meter are well worth the extra money.

Right now I have a Fowlr tank but I want to set up a soft coral tank.

Depends on your water utility. You should be able to get a report online, utilities are required by law to test water and publish the results. Here's a couple of my systems and the ICP test for the 90:

Does anyone have a video for people who live in apartments? All videos I see people have their RODI in a laundry room

Thanks for this

cheap too
Um, question. So on all my faucets the part you twist out is inside the part where the water comes out. I can unscrew the part from the faucet but the part I attach the adapter to is inside the faucet. Anything else I can do?
