Rodi waste water uses

it depends on your water. tds dosnt mean squat without knowing what the dissolved solids are!

my well water is around 255tds out of the faucet and town water is around 35tds. I would put my well water strait into the tank before the town water most of what is in my well water is basically dirt but town water has chlorine,fluoride.......

concentrated sand wont hurt anything but concentrated chemicals will......

p.s. DO NOT drink ro/di water it is bad for you and your pets!! BELIEVE ME IT PUT ME IN THE HOSPITAL!! (I was drinking about 2g a day and working construction but....)

its great for the sw tanks because the salt mix puts all the minerals the ro/di takes out of the water back in, if you drink ro it will steal the minerals from your body, bones and joints. if you drink some ro water notice it will make you more thirsty

Dirt does not register as TDS. TDS are dissolved solids, things in the 0.0001 micron range. TSS or Total suspeneded solids are large particulates, silt, sediment and colloidal materials larger than TDS and which are removed by the sediment and carbon block filters which are in the 0.2 to 10.0 micron range.

Drinking RO/DI does not cause an health problems in a normal human eating a sensible diet. You cannot possibly drink enough RO/DI to cause yourself harm, you would flood your cells and drown internally way before that point. Eating even one potato chip replaces all the things removed from gallons or RO/DI and then some. Besides that, the minerals in water are inorganic and our bodies rely or organic minerals and cannot assimilate the inorganic minerals.

The WHO has been trying to prove drinking RO and RO/DI is harmful for decades but every single test has come up inconclusive since man cannot live on water alone.

Waste water from an RO system is about twice as clean as tap water. It gets filtered through a sediment filter and carbon. You can return this by testing your tap water and then testing your waste water with a TDS meter. My waste water is always less than half the TDS of my tap water which means cleaner water.

Sediment and carbon block filters have very little to absolutely noting to do with TDS. They are there to protect the RO membrane from TSS or suspended solids, silt, sediment, particulates and colloidal materials, big stuff. TDS is dossolved solids, things at the molecular level 0.0001 microns and smaller so pass right through as sedimen tcan carbon filter with the exception of 1 or 2 ppm chlorine and volatiles.

The TDS of your brine or waste will be approximately 20-25% higher than your tap water was to begin with at the normal 4:1+/- waste ratio.

The TDS after the sediment and carbon block filters will be the same as your tap water within a couple of TDS since it has only had the suspended solids and chlorine removed, everything else passes through. It is not cleaner than tap water unless you have high suspended matter which should not be the case if you are on a municipal water system where turbidity and particle counts are required by law.

The zero waste systems are limited to about 15GPD and are for small drinking water systems only. I for one have no desire to dump concentrated brine in my hot water heater, shortening its expensive life.

Oh wow. I didn't know we're limited to small systems. I never really researched. Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't, the brine or waste is at least 20-25% higher TDS than the tap water was to begin with and the residual chlorine disinfectant has been removed by the carbon block. Sediment and carbon filters do not remove any bacteria or viruses that may be present so if any are present they could multiply quickly with no chlorine present. RO membranes, at least the 75 GPD Dow Filmtec and GE Water 100 GPD, do provide three log removal of bacteria and viruses so myeslf I give my pets RO only water or blend it with a little tap water for taste but no waste or brine.

The Dow 100 GPD membrane is not an approved drinking water membrane since it is only 90% rejection rate and does not provide three log removal so is labelled as "Pool and Spa Use" by the ANSI/NSF. It is the least desirable membrane to have and most good vendors will talk you out of that one or they are doing you a disservice.

Hey AZ I was reading some OLD posts on other forums from years ago that you posted on the same topic. Seems a lot of people are interested in doing other things with the waste water as well, rather than dumping it. But you are right and the with the TDS being higher and more concentrate I think ill stick to tap for the dogs. Lol ill use the waste to fill there pool.

I wouldn't recommend drinking RO/DI myself but its due to the fact it does not taste good. Since it has no minerals it is very blah or bland and does not refresh your taste buds. I do recommend drinking RO only water though and have done so for over 15 years in our home. It still contains enough minerals that it tastes good in most cases, and it has been through the RO membrane so is healthy as far as Giardia, Cryptosporidium, viruses and bacteria.

I made a major investment to cut my wasted water by buying a Spectrapure UHE-100 ultra low waste RO/DI system. It uses stored DI water to flush and to pickle the membrane so I can run it at less than 1:1 waste ratio even though my tap water TDS exceeds 600. The system is over 5 years old now, gets a lot of use and the RO only rejection rate is still over 99%. My tap averages 600+ and the RO only TDS varies between 2 and 3 which is remarkable to me and I'm in the water utility busines myself so have seeen many systems over the last 38 years of my career.

Hmm. Something's not right here. TDS of your waste water (this is why we call it "concentrate") is HIGHER than your feedwater. Your RO water ("permeate") is the nearly pure h20 removed from your feedwater. This is what concentrates the contaminants in the "waste water."

you need to do some more tests! unless you know something the blood tests I had didnt know?
red dye40 "isnt bad" either but it took 40 tries to pass threw the fda before they said it was "safe enough"

RO and RODI WATER will HURT YOU!!
it put me in the hospital dropped my mag levels caused some kind of acid in my joints..... I found out because I passed out on a job and woke up in the hospital!! they said it was from drinking the about 2g of rodi water a day and cooking on a roof working. at the time I was 26 weighed 190 lifting over 300# and very healthy

unless you know something the blood tests I had didnt know?

I would think bottled water is RO water. At least a good portion of it. Not sure how water would make someone pass out unless not gettin supplements from food.

RO water is safe. DI, to my understanding, is questionable.

I don't see how it could lower magnesium. Unless you are on a 100% water diet. LOL

mainereefer, are you sure you didn't faint from dehydration and have acid (maybe lactic acid?) build up from something else?

I've been drinking the RODI water I make because the tap water here is awful. I haven't noticed any ill effects...but then, it couldn't be worse than the source water. Yuck.

Water from a reef RODI unit should be 0 TDS, just about absolutely pure. Because of this, it CAN strip minerals (and toxins, for what it's worth) from your body. For it to have an effect as extreme as that, however, I would suggest that you may already have had a deficiency.

I have tested my RO/DI waste water. My feed is 700ppm, the waste is 1000ppm and after the membrane is 15ppm. If you are on a sewer just run it down the drain where it will get reprocessed....You are really not wasting the water

I agree with AZ DR, I wouldnt drink RO/DI water due to the possible taste....I dont even like the smell. I have a 3 way valve coming off of the membrane where I can fill jugs with just RO water

Anything in excess can be bad for you, even tap water, gatorade or beer.
You example was an extreme. Overextending yourself and drinking 2 gallons of RO/DI is a rare case, did you eat nutritious foods to supplement your diet? Did you drink anything other than RO/DI to supplement your diet? Common sense has to enter the picture somewhere, I think your case was unique and very rare.

at the time: 6' 1", 180# and lifting over 300# !! I ate good, take vitamins, and drank a ton of water. my dad is a nutritionist......... so yes I was totally healthy!!
the problem was I was drinking 2+ gallons a day of rodi water (roofer in maine) I dont drink soda pop, or milk, mostly just water. now I mix 1/4 rodi with 3/4 well water
one morning I started getting dizzy spells and 2 days later I was in the hospital with mineral deficiencies the lactic acid could be from lobster I do eat it often , its cheaper than burger :)
