Red is used by zooxanthellae algae
That said the zooxanthellae algae in corals do very well with only 400nM to 500nM Spectrum... Back in the day our Birdsnest Frags grew well using only 450nm Royal Blue...
Just a reminder in tropical reefs the <600nM is rather limited...
For those with a Refuge Red Is Important... Macroalgae like Cheato are shallow water and do better with this.
Battle Corals grow their frags in shallow tanks under 400 watt MH....Well over the 500-600 PAR that starts photoinhibition... Say 3X that +...
Not sure today but back then their MH Bulbs had plenty of the warm spectrum... No Nuisance Algae due to regular maintenance of frags and aggressive skimming to reduce nutrients...
For SPS Strong Light is good as the reflective pigments that protect the SPS from too much light often result in awesome colour from the pigments that reflect this light...
For LPS and softies its a simple modification of the number of zooxanthellae algae... That said I would bet that some genus of Euphyllia also use reflective pigments in shallow reefs.
Just a bit of food for thought...
