:eek:I had planned to move my tailspot from QT to DT...noticed that the DT salinity was down to 1.021 as opposed to 1.025 in QT and about the same in the fresh salt water...no good...I think that my ato has a problem, but I unplugged it yesterday...I've been taking out cups of DT water and adding cups of fsw...I've done this about 4 times but not seeing any appreciable change...how could this be?...I checked the refractometer with a floating salinity measurer, about the same...I'm worried about my corals and fish...also worried about moving salinity too fast although that doesn't seem to be happening...Any answers, any advise?...getting kind of desperate!:eek:

OK, you are off by about 60 mg of salt. That's what you need to get from 1.021 to 1.025 in 3 gallons. One cup of water exchanged from 1.021 to 1.025 water only adds 1.25mg of salt.

EDIT: That means you need to swap out all three gallons of water.

This a 10 gal. Fusion...what do you recommend for a fix asap? The QT is 3 gal..trying to bring up the salt in the DT...safely...

Oh! You said your QT was low in the original post. You can increase the salinity in your tank by .002 sg per day safely. That means you are low by 200mg of salt. You can swap out water with higher salinity water to make this change happen faster. It will take you forever doing it a cup at a time with water at 1.025.

Make sure the FSW you are putting in is at desired level.

Also issue really should have nothing to do with your ATO.
ATO is generally just to provide your top off and will not change the SG if running properly. ATO is used to assist from having big swings when people forget to top off(never mind other benefits)

As mentioned your SG in tank and FSW was 1.021 so you need to make sure on water changes you are putting in 1.025.

OR if maybe your ATO malfunctioned which would mean it just kept pumping into tank but then most likely you have a flood somewhere depending on ATO water container size.

I would still calibrate the refractometer and check again.

You are on the right track just need to make sure what you are putting in is a desired level and do things slow

Sorry...excited...how do I do this safely ?...I have couple of montis , softees, fire fish and ywg?...

What is slow...in 10 gal, switch out a cup per???
You can safely increase by .002 per day, so it will take you two days to get up to 1.025. To go from 1.021 to 1.025 is a difference of 5.3mg/L of salt. Your tank is 38L, so that's 201.4mg of salt. So you need to add 100mg per day for two days.

Simply swapping out water that is at 1.025 will work too, but you'll need a lot more water.

You could just fill your ATO reservoir with saltwater and allow that to bring your salinity back up. Just make sure you only use enough to get to 1.025.

I am not a chemist and this is the hard part for me...could I get: so many ounces of such and such salinity every (hour?)...swapping out the DT water each time?...

I'm not a chemist either :) Which is likely why I said mg instead of grams. Ha! Replace everything I said about mg and use grams. You need to add 100grams today and 100 grams tomorrow. 100g is 3.5 ounces. You can take a gallon of water out of the tank (turn off your ato) and dissolve 3.5 ounces of salt into it. Put it back in the tank. Do the same thing tomorrow.
