thinking about switching salts...what brand is everyone using that requires the least amount of tweeking?

i'm using crystal sea Bio-assay...fortified in magnesium but a little low on alk and cal.probably the cheapest salt out there...$25-30 for 150g box.

reef crystals. affordable and if its good enough for LA, then its good enough for me. i let my Ca reactor do my tweeking ; )

seachem REEF SALT after using many many kinds. only thing needed to add is mag. few capfuls after a water change is usually all i need. honestly after switching to this salt, i saw a HUGE diff, and it's not that i was only using cheap salts or anything. this just seems to contain everything needed for the mixed reef that i have.

I personally use brightwells. I think it really boils down to personal preference. I have heard great things about seachem. I know quite a few people who use it with great results.

yeah dakota, considering i use a billion brightwell products daily, i figured their salt must be perfect. plus, i'm a sucker for packaging hahaha. now, i am not trying to knock what you use in any way, just trying to get your opinion on it since you use brightwell salt. anyway, my two good reef buddies tried brightwell for a short period of time, and aside from the weird chemical smell, residue, and sort of burn-to-the-touch feeling when the salt wasn't thoroughly mixed, it actually ended up making my their chalices start to recede and lose color. now, it could be that cuz my boss uses the Ultra-lith system (sort of like Zeovit) and doses most stuff in the tank, his alk went sky high, which i think is already fairly high in brightwell's salt.

what ticked me off so much is that i heard this same thing from numerous people, all independent of each other, who used this salt at one time or another. i am really hoping they tweeked it a little bit to fix this, because i was SO SO hopeful when i saw this salt hit the market, and became really confused when these results started popping up.

sorry i threw the thread kind of off topic, but dakota, because u mentioned BW salt, i just had to see if u EVER had these problems with it, if maybe it was only an issue in the first few batches they came out with, and if now it is a reliable salt. i am very happy with seachem, but i am just hoping BW salt is the quality it should be with that name behind it. nearly every main product they make is great IMO, so thats why i ask. sorry for the long post...

edit: and luvmyacans, i jus saw you post that u use it too, if u could comment at all i'd love to hear anything. thx

ca reactors are meant to keep a system stable from daily depletion. If the calcium level going in is at 325, the calcium reactor is designed to keep it at 325 steady. If you're using it for "tweaking", you're asking for trouble with unpredictable swings.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Someone had told me the burning sensation you can get from the dry salt when your hands are wet, is due to the chemical they use to help the salt mix quickly(just what I heard).

Now I can say from personal experience that I have felt the burning sensation when my hands are wet and I touch the dry salt. I have only noticed positive impact on all my corals(switched from IO). Not one of my chalices have receeded or lost any color.

Just my experience.

well thats exactly what i wanted to hear. it stinks that it may even be the case that they add a chemical to help the salt mix quicker, but the main factor is what does it do to your corals, and i was hoping you'd say it was only desirable results. thx for the feedback

i was joking. i sorta know what i'm doing ; )

brightwells left too much residue in my mixing cans. i got tired of cleaning them after a while.

i've heard good things about the ESV salt, but it requires a little bit more work to mix.

I use TM pro, I want to try TM bio but i was told that TM pro is better with a zeo system.

That's very interesting info on BW.so far I'm not sold on it considering the price tag.
