Salt mix

Used Tropic marin pro for many years. Recently switched to Red Sea pro. Its much cheaper and I am happy with the elevated
levels of mag, alk, calcium. Going to switch to Red Sea reg salt for better color, as opposed to faster growth with the pro.
All in all, super happy with Red Sea salt...:) Never had cyanno issues with red sea as well.

I've used IO, reefcrystals and red sea new formula salt not the pro just the red sea regular. Imo the IO works good and mixes the best. But I have noticed better colors since using redsea salt(not pro). But I know several people using IO in sps tanks with great results. In the end I think its more how well u take care of your system. I would just use the cheapest salt u can find with a good name aka IO or RedSea regular.

If you go Red Sea know that Coral Pro is designed for growth while plain old Red Sea is for color maintenance. Basically Coral Pro contains elevated levels of trace elements needed for faster growth. I use Reef Crystals but am thinking of switching after I run out to Coral Pro. I'm not nuts about the fact that Reef Crystals has a metal detoxifier to neutralize traces of heavy metals from city water. It's built in. I don't believe I need it and am not sure A) what it is specifically and B) what the long term effects are.

Same with me. Quite a few people in my local club have reported cyano issues with Red Sea Coral Pro. Anybody else experience this?

RSCP almost destroyed my tank. I lost a number of pieces and a ton of STN. I got a bad batch it had alk of 16+ dkh.

My reef crystals always leaves a layer of brown in the mixing container. Then I store it in 5 gal containers and they get a brown layer on the bottom.

I'm switching to coral life because I've heard good things.

I know a guy that says the same thing happens to him and he heard it's a pretty common issue.

I was a Coralife user for a few years. I liked it but the Calcium was always too high (520). I switched to Reef Crystals and have been using it for the past couple of years with no issues. I got the brown film from both salts. It's thick in my mixing barrel now. I don't bother to clean it out but maybe once a year. I don't know which one it is but doesn't one of the Red Sea salts have a really high alk like 13-14 dkh? Way too high for my tank.

I mix it up between synthetic and evaporative salts. I'm currently using red sea coral pro and salinity. The red sea mixes so much faster and clearer so I tend to use it if I'm in a hurry. The salinity has been very good as well - no complaints.

I used IO for about 5 years and decided to try RC and I noticed better polyp extension with in a how of a water change. So I'm really thinking about trying RSCP to see how my tank will reacted.

I bought 60 gallons worth of red sea today in a reef starter pack, it was marked down from $60 to $12 at petco. It came with the salt, ph & alk test, snd some other stuff. The red sea mixed up nice and came out about 1.025 mixing half a cup per gallon.

I get a very small amount of brown stuff around the surface of my mixing container with RC, but not enough to worry me or cause any problems. I get it super cheap and will stick with it. People seem to go with whatever is tready in a given year and change all the time after they have problems. In my local reef club, last year everyone bought RSCP and this year those same people all bought Kent. I won't risk problems with all the changes of salt. Guess that's just me.
