Salty build in SA

Small daily steps...

ASM G4 skimmer with modified impeller and 3 media reactors.

A Temporary static cling to back of tank to tease of what is to come...

Short 4" filter socks or long 4" filter socks... any thoughts? I'm thinking that using the shorts will keep me from leaving socks in for too long before changing them out whereas the longs will obviously hang in there longer before overflowing out the top. Thinking maybe just situational? Keep the longs on stand by when I know it will be a few days before I have time to change them out... I like the idea of using the shorts and helping me keep on top of my maintenance... what do you guys do?

Looking good. I would go black with the back of the tank, especially with the shadow overflow (jealous.)

Great work on the stand.

Thanks bknapp... I think I agree with you on going black for the black panel. It will help the shadow overflow further disappear.

Good-looking setup. Looking forward to seeing where it goes from here!

Thanks mdbannister! I'm looking forward to see where it goes from here as well. :)

This weekend I plan to go ahead and drill the 2 return holes in the back panel and begin the plumbing. After that the only thing I'll be waiting on to get water in the tank is that Shadow Overflow. When they said they were shipping early to mid November I'm hoping for early... Or maybe even a surprise and end of October... probably not.

It's been 4 weeks now since I put together the tank. Silicone should be good and cured. It's time to water test this guy. But first I want to drill the 2 additional return holes in the back panel.

Moved it down onto a separate stand for drilling...

Now having it down you can see the clarity difference big time between the low iron panels and the regular panels...

Marked my locations. Center of bulk heads are 3" down from top of tank. Left to right each bulkhead will be centered between the Shadow overflow and the inside of the tank panel.

Bottom of glass taped and ready to go...

Put in padded panels around interior of tank to make sure a falling glass disc can't scratch or chip the low-iron panels...

Clay ring down... ready for water and drilling...

First hole with a fresh bit took about 3-4 minutes. Went perfect.

Disc was held in place by the tape and didn't fall.

One side done...

Other side set and ready....

Drilling...

2nd hole took a little longer. More like 6-7 min.

Almost there...

Both holes done...

Tank back up on stand and put on a 3/4" Styrofoam pad. Time to water test...

20161008_183814.jpg

Wrapped head of hose with a few layers of duct tape to keep it from scratching inside of tank once water starts flowing.

20161008_184955.jpg

And it begins...

20161008_185036.jpg

Getting there...

20161008_185401.jpg

Almost full...

20161008_190001.jpg

Roughly 67-68 gallons in but I must stop here. About 3/8" from bottom of bulkhead holes for the Shadow overflow. Hard to see them from this pic but they are there.

A few hours later no signs of leaks. Total actual water volume of the tank once the overflow is in should be about 83-84 gallons going off of inside measurements and how far from top rim of tank water will sit.

Water test was a success. Drained the tank this afternoon. Now it's time to paint the back.

Going with a black Hi-Gloss enamel... Applying with a cabinet grade wienie roller.

Tank prepped, tapped and ready for paint.

First coat came out looking great. From the display side it already looks perfect. From the back side there is some minor thin areas so I'll let this dry for the next 4 hours and do a second and final coat.
