Sand for your tank from the beach?

Beach sand is great, depending on sand type and which beach you get it from. As for any pollutants, it's gonna have the same pollutants you find in any live rock or live sand that comes from the ocean. Though the fine for taking it is anywhere from $5000 to $20000, depending on location. For that kinda money, you may prefer to use crushed sapphire or crushed pearl.
With most beaches being they typical silicate based sand, it's better to just buy some sand that looks a little better to begin with. If you are so cheap to pay $25 for 20 pounds of good sand that you would rather haul around brown silicate based beach sand then I would more advise going with playsand. Natural playsand from home depot cost less than $5 for a 50 pound bag.

Bishop, thegrilledcheesus is in high school, he doesnt have a regular paying job so he is looking for cheap options for more sand. You would know this if you were an actual member of MTRC, but you arent, and yet you always come to our forum and call people out that you dont even know. This is a club forum where everyone knows each other and that is why they post questions like this. They are asking people they know or have met at our meetings, and feel like they know a little bit about them. So take that for what you will, and maybe reconsider calling someone cheap or whatever judgmental thing you usually come up with when you are on a local club forum for which you are not even a member.

If getting this sand is just a point of economy, I would simply skip the sand altogether. No question...no brainer. Don't care if the sand is from 'Jersey or Ohio.

P.S. About one pound per gallon of real live rock (sometimes less) will do everything the sand would do and likely more, in terms of filtration. The things the rock won't do, you don't really need.

I would love to go barebottom, but my favorite fish is the blue dot jawfish, and they need a DSBIf getting this sand is just a point of economy, I would simply skip the sand altogether. No question...no brainer. Don't care if the sand is from 'Jersey or Ohio.

The blue spot jaw fish is an awesome fish but, in my research they are not well suited for a reef tank long term. They seem to need cooler temps than other reef inhabitants. Adding a BSJF is something I think you should strongly reconsider.

Nicely put Dow! Most of us come here looking for friendly advice, and in this hobby, looking for any way possible to save where you can helps. Unfortunately, there are no local clubs in my area, that being said, I rely a lot on good advice from all of you! Thanks.

Myth.
While bare-bottom might be too challenging, a sand bed is certainly not a requirement. Jawfish will "den" under a rock, make a cave out of snail shells, live rock bits, or anything else he can grab and move.
Jumping out is going to be your main concern with these guys IME. They are in the same class as the worst wrasses in this aspect, and they tend to be twitchy.
Not the most excellent beginner fish when it comes down to it....fairly expensive to boot.
On the plus side, as long as you get one established they are obviously beautiful and have a very interesting personality. If you can see on in person, check out the Pearly Jawfish as an alternative. Good in groups, beautiful in person (prolly doesn't photograph that well because it's subtle.), acclimates more readily IME, and is usually more inexpensive.
I don't know if I'd try to add either one to a tank where there were more aggressive fish (or going to be). If they take to hiding, they may never come out to feed and starve. I'd let the Jawfish be king.
