Sand for your tank from the beach?

Bishop, thegrilledcheesus is in high school, he doesnt have a regular paying job so he is looking for cheap options for more sand. You would know this if you were an actual member of MTRC, but you arent, and yet you always come to our forum and call people out that you dont even know. This is a club forum where everyone knows each other and that is why they post questions like this. They are asking people they know or have met at our meetings, and feel like they know a little bit about them. So take that for what you will, and maybe reconsider calling someone cheap or whatever judgmental thing you usually come up with when you are on a local club forum for which you are not even a member.

I may not be a member of your club but playsand is still the cheapest and beach sand can still cost $5000 a bucket.

Figured I would ask this here. I have access to river sand... I don't know if it is usable for saltwater or not but I have access to barges full of it. I personally would not use it not knowing if it's safe or not but if it is usable I can get you all you need for free

How many people have gone to the ocean and not come back with a bottle of sand or something. My wife does it every time. I would almost bet 90 percent of tourists do as well.

I've used silica play sand from Lowes for years with good results. If you go through the bags usually some are whiter than others. And don't let anyone tell you that silica sand will cause diatoms because it doesn't.

I have heard you can do Southdown sand from Home Depot and just let it cycle for a long time

I used it for my American chclids tank IV never heard that about a reef tank and wilder pool filter sant work better I know it dose with fresh

I've taken about a half of a five gal bucket of sand from gulf shores, AL, it was mostly crushed coral and broken shells. Also a bunch of sand crabs although most of the sand crabs died. I haven't had any issues.

Though I agree it may have been a bit of an attacking sort of comment you can't fault the guy for the point he is attempting to make, especially when "thegrilledcheesus" follows it up with making a point of wanting a blue dot jawfish. Every place that I've seen one of these fish they have been pretty expensive. My point being that if you can't afford to buy what is best to support your fish, you shouldn't be looking at buying an expensive and more fragile fish.

Save the money, spend the money, be patient and then when the time is right add your fish. Be patient and you and whatever you choose to stock your tank with will be much better for it. The better the end results, no matter how long it takes, the more you will keep interest in the hobby as well. I rushed my first tank and quickly found, not only what I could have done better for a better overall experience, but also found that I got to the point of "full" WAY too quickly and began finding myself less interested in saltwater as a hobby. I had to upgrade and take my time with my new tank to spark my interest.

More time and money up front = Happier you, happier marine life and an overall greater and longer lasting appreciation of the hobby

no sand go barebottom so much easier to clean out detritus.... on another not I've brought back hermit crab shells (empty) from the Philippines and it's so cool to occasionally see a blue-leg making using of it in my tank
