Sb bar vs reefbrite for 16" above water

Need some advice on supplemental blue LEDs for my ATI fixture. I'm running an 8 bulb ATI on my frag system. The ATI fixture sits 16" above the waterline.

Many of the complaints that I see about the sb bar vs. reefbrite are that the sb bar is super focused. I haven't seen reviews of anyone running it 16" above the tank though. I'm afraid that the reefbrite might actually be weak at that height.

Anyone have any experience between the two at a high height like this?
 
If the Sbars are to focused you can always pop the lenses off, they have the same lenses as all the other BB's.

I don't know about these lights, but if you're running LED's that far off the tank, you're going to want lenses that get that light into the tank. 16" is high and your room doesn't need the light!! ;)

For example, "un-lensed" 120º emitters will give you a spot almost 56" in diameter from 16" high!!

If we say you're running a 24" wide tank, then you'd want at least 90º lenses....60º might be more ideal.
 
I run the reef bar with my ATI 8 bulb 17.5" off the water on my frag tank. I don't actually know the par numbers but it lights up the corals well on a 2 foot wide tank. The side the reef bar isn't on is a little darker though.
 
I run a 48” reefbrite 15” over my tank to supplement blue to my metal halides.

I wish I would have known about the sb bar before I bought the reefbrite.

Not that the reefbrite isn’t any good, cause it is. But because sb reef lights is a forum sponsor here and I believe in supporting our vendors

Also I have gotten good responses from sb reeflight when asking questions about his products now that I am thinking of buying a led system to replace my halides

60 degree lenses at that height will spread 18" at the waterline..
90 degree lenses will spread 36".....................

Match lens angle to your tank width and light height..
Any of the cheap Chinese bars can probably have their lenses swapped out..

Of course you will want to toe them in a bit so throws off the measurements a bit..
Can't imaging the sbreef lights have narrower than 60 degree lenses..

i use a fixture from ebay for $6o. I swear it's the same thing lol. It must be popular because the price has increased, I had free shipping with mine.

Those may look ok, maybe. But they are not anything like the Sbar or even the XHO from Reef Bright. First of all the maker or type of LEDs isn't listed, only its wavelength 470. Second, 470nm is not the ideal spectrum for corals, even as a supplement only. ~450nm,~420nm, and~380nm are the prefered LEDs for corals.

The reef bar looks to be a little different, as the reef bar comes with a mixture of blue and uv led and can also be dimmed.


The Sbars have, Cree 450nm XPE, the brightest Royal Blue diode on the market and Epistar 420nm Violet. These are THE best LEDs available right now in those spectrum and every single company that makes reef lights(Ecotech, AI, MAXSpec....) use these LEDs or a lower grade. Only Kessil actually makes their own LEDs. Also 450, and 420 are exactly the spectrums you want to hit for "pop" and coral health. Next, there seems to be almost no real heat sink on the ebay light. Heat kills and a thin sheet of aluminum isnt going to through off enough heat to prevent those LEDs from burning up, UNLESS they have turned way down the wattage/voltage so low that they barely illuminate. The aluminum on the back off the Sbar is hefty and will keep the LED chips cool.

Maybe you cant see much but the diffrences are huge. Please as a personnel favor to me dont buy those specific lights, please. Not saying that they wouldnt work but its not right. Also I am only speaking about the light in this thread, maybe other "low cost" light on ebay are not so bad.

Final thought:

SB Reef Lights was born because the owner didn't think you should have to mortgage your house to buy lights. He personally designed and created all his lights to, #1 grow and show off coral just as well if not better than the expensive lights with a well made light and most important, #2 not have to get a loan just to grow corals.

If you want to grow corals, have a awesome looking tank, but dont want to speand a whole lot of money the SB Reef Lights is your answer.

If you just need something to light the tank so you can see whats in it, shop ebay and 60$ well spent.

I just use it for color pop. I dont think the intention of any supplemental light bar is to grow coral. I have three mitras on my tank and the whites are ramped up the same as the blues. This is my reason for adding a cheap supplemental light. The 470 nm range works very well for flourescence, and thats all I need them for.

I just bought the same light bar , did you mount yours to an Ati fixture? If so do you mind sharing a pic of how you did it ?
I have three of the sb reef bars and they are mounted to ATI fixtures. I will get a pic for you today. It's pretty simple, you just remove 1 screw on each end and put the bracket on and put the screw back in.

What do you think of them after using them a while? Does it add shimmer while the T5s are on? Or does it just help with pop?

I like them a lot. They don’t add much shimmer but do add a lot of color pop.
