Morning everyone! I need some help. I’ve got a thought process I’m trying to think through with my Iodine levels. I started testing Iodine with the Hanna nitrite tester about 9 months ago. The ATI tests said I was low (35) on Iodine and wanted to start dosing. Test worked pretty good, so I started dosing Iodine at 0.02 ml a day and got it up to the 70-80 range. Life was good. But, It started creeping up to 100-120 over several months, so I stopped dosing. However, it kept creeping up to higher levels. Last ATI test said close to 300. It doesn’t seem to want to go down. I looked at everything I was dosing trying to figure out why it kept going up.

I suspect now the level is between 1000-1200. Here is what I was dosing. KZ FWS and KZ 1234 plus doing daily 1% auto water changes. I figured one of those had to be the culprit. I stopped doing the FWS and went to 30% level on the KZ 1234, but the iodine level is so still too high for the Hanna tester to show a valid result.

Thought process I’m looking at gives me four possible options. Bad RO-DI filters, bad box of salt mix, The FWS or the KZ1234. I changed out my RO-DI filters and membranes. Since I stopped the FWS two months ago, that shouldn’t be it. Levels won’t go down. I checked my salt mix and it was okay and did a 30% water change and no help. That left me with looking at the KZ 1234. I use the 1 liter bottles. I’m thinking the iodine levels started going up as I got close to using the last bit of liquid in the one liter bottles. My thinking is I wasn’t shaking the bottles good enough and the concentration of iodine was getting higher with each dose. Bottle Number 4 is the one with iodine in it. I got new bottles and as I said, I’ve dropped the dose level to 30% to see if I can gradually get the iodine level down. The other thing I looked at was possible contamination of the iodine test reagents. I got new reagents, but the levels still show elevated when testing.

Does all that make sense, or is there something else I should be looking at?

This is everyones experience as far as i can tell.

FWS and high iodine posts are hand in hand. @billyocean and I were talking about this last evening. Cut your FWS dosing down and it will likely resolve.

Edit: i see you already did that my mistake. Someone else was hypothesizing that iodine can "build up" over time. Completrly anecdotal bt bassically a deprived reef will take a good maintenance dose to get to a level that sticks around, then the maintenance dose can decrease significantly. Tbh its somewhat been my experience.

I made up some iodine and manganese and saw a similar question to needing to shake, essentially RHF stated without a centrifuge, under normal gravity nothing should settle out of solution except solids that wont dissolve in the aquarium anyway.
