Scopas tang

id of the tang please?

Thats a very tough tang to ID. Many of the less common acanthurus tangs in the trade look somewhat similar.

However, based on the white tail and clear line separating the tail, the yellowish hue to the fins, and the tiny mark behind the gills, and what appears to be "white lips", my guess is that it is a juvenile black shoulder tang (Acanthurus nigricauda). http://www.biolib.cz/en/image/id104945/ http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+43+2991&pcatid=2991

Another possibility is a Fowlerii tang (Acanthurus fowleri) but the mark behind the gills is significant and I see faint beginnings of the black line on both the tail spine and behind the gills.

I would have to say that looks like a baby tenniti or lieutenant tang
I thought so too, except for the white tail, clearly separated and the white lips. Not the best photo though.

Devoid of those two features, Tennenti tang could explain the black mark as well.

I have one in a 180G with a Sailfin Tang and a Blue Hippo Tang. The Scopas can be aggressive from time to time, but overall I like him.

My yellow was way more skittish then scopas. I like mine has some powder blue specs under certain lighting.

is this tang rare?

is this tang rare?
I've only seen one or two in person over the years, maybe 3 or 4 on forums. I don't look a whole lot, either but yeah I would say in the trade they are uncommon
